400/4 model kit
« on: December 20, 2018, 12:16:23 AM »
I was looking for a suitable model kit to modify into a 400/4 when I discovered a Japanese manufacturer brought out 2 models about 3 years ago, one for each  basic version. A 1974 model with footrests on swingarm and a 1976 model with frame loops.
I've bought the later one and it's good quality moulding, on a par with Tamiya models.

Made by Aoshima and available in UK from Hiroboy.com or kentmodels.co.uk

Any other modellers out there?

Gareth

I bought the one with the red tank, the US version.   It was progressing well but it's been on stop for ages because I can't get the engine lined up in the frame.   I'm going to have to modify it,using some .5mm wire as the long engine mounting bolts.  My eyesight isn't as good as it was so I'm struggling a bit.  I should get off my arse and finish it.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

I dont have the 400/4 kit (yet) but I did get a Tamiya 1/12 CB750 kit for Christmas, my other half admits she is encouraging my addiction :)
I havent opened up the kit yet but I know I need to get myself a few things.. glue, long tweezers and maybe even a good magnifying light (eyes are not the best for fine work) and a decent Airbrush setup.. I have other uses for the Airbrush anyway.

Where do others get their paint from? I am torn between the gold flake on the box and Candy Red... leaning slightly to Candy red really.
Now I need to go and see about ordering that 400/4 kit :)

Over the winter, I normally build a few plastic models and last year built the CB750 shown. I painted it with some RS Paints aerosol gold, left over from painting a new side panel for the 500/4. With the careful use of plastic primer and lacquer, it has turned out fine, although rather darker than on the full size.

I found the kit a real challenge, in fact leaving it for long periods and then going back to it seemed to work best for me. The main problem was the need to scrape the "chrome" off all of the parts where a glued edge was required.

Anyway, it is on display now and looks good when finished!

Thanks for that info.. I havent even opened the box yet but did watch a Youtube clip showing an unboxing.. and it does look to be a challenge.
I was kind of surprised at the size of it.. around 370mm long I believe when finished... not sure where I will display it when eventually finished though.
I need to check out some of the Airbrush paints to get the Candy Ruby Red.. seems a lot of them are Water-based but dont have a Candy colour at least the Triton range here .
I think Tamiya do a Candy Ruby Red... I figure I should maybe get the tank, side covers etc painted first and let them dry properly as a first step.

I would love to see a pic of the finished item if possible.. just to give me some inspiration :)

I use Humbol paints.  There's a few metallic in the range.  I can't be done with the water based shite.

I constantly build models, usually aircraft, but I must admit I've always wanted that CB750 kit, I must get round to building one sometime, I used to build loads of model bikes in my misspent youth even carved racing tanks and seats out of balsa for a couple of CB72/77 kits that I built.

Cheers

Andych, I can't manage to post photographs on the forum however, if you would like to send me your e-mail address then I will happily take a couple of pictures and send them over to you. If you decide to do that, you are more than welcome to put them on the forum if you are able!

The finished model is, as you say quite large - I have just measured it at 27cm in length.

Andych, pm received and now just awaiting the camera battery to charge for pictures. I took a couple on the Smartphone, however quality poor even by my standards, so I'll not bother to send those!

Just into daylight here (around 30 minutes ago) and raining outside, 3c. Whilst I wouldn't want your 40C+ having spent a very hot summer in Japan this year, a little better than this would be welcome.

Me too. I also did one that was a moving cutaway 750sohc engine, but don't remember the maker. It even had flashing spark plugs.

I used to build loads of Airfix kits, mostly aircraft, when I was a kid and got quite good at modifying them into different variants etc.
So when I found an un-built Airfix railway loco in the loft a couple of months ago, I thought I'd build it to try an rekindle my early days.
Big mistake. I've nearly finished it and it looks like the work of a 4 year old. Glue smudges, wonky bits, hairs and dust in the paint.
The trouble is that at the age of 64, the eyesight has deteriorated, despite glasses, and the feeling in the finger tips is much reduced making handling small parts very difficult.
However, I was thinking of putting this together but with a little more care and because its a much bigger scale (1:12) so the parts are bigger:

This is from Hiroboy, but out of stock at the moment, but have my name down for one.
This is a also an attempt at rekindling my youth as a B-reg C100 was my first Bike (in 1968) and the first of what became a succession of bigger and bigger Hondas.
Best regards,
Phil
