.GOV Registration search
« on: January 11, 2019, 05:08:32 PM »
I have just searched for my old 500Four to see if its still registered. It comes up as last taxed in September 1980. Does this mean that its still on their records and in someones shed or that DVLA are just giving me info on when it was last taxed?
I sold it to Onger Motorcycles in August 1975 in part ex for a ZIB - has 42000 on the clock
Reg was ABA 953L
Current Bikes:-
Honda CB750K2 (1975)
Honda CB500K2 (12/1972)
Honda CR750 Replica (1972)
Honda CB350K0 (1969)
Kawasaki ZZR1100D3 (1995)
Kawasaki ZZR250 (1990) Project (Going on eBay ASAP)

I wouldn't read too much into that - my old K1 was showing tax due in June 91, but I subsequently discovered it had been written off in 1989/90 but the DVLA were not aware.

Hope you have more luck that I did and it's sitting in a lock-up waiting for some tlc.

Cheers

Just means it hasn’t been taxed since then.....the bike itself could be anywhere, scrapped, stripped or left in a barn to be found and restored.

But they don’t release the registration do they(?)

I’d have my old plate back in an instant (NGK 62L).

It would be illegal on my 500 but I’d put it on my Tiger 800!

I dont know how it works Steve....I guess they cant release a number uless they have documents to show that it’s been scrapped...and they probably have other limitations for releasing old numbers. Selling old numbers is big business for them these days...

My understanding is they never reuse a number, the age related ones are ones that were never used at the time

You’re probably right there.....  you could transfer an old registration from one of your old machines but you used to have to get the original machine mot’d first, impossible/impractical for many old wrecks. But maybe that situation has changed now with the new rules...?

they will not re-release old plates unless the original vehicle is still on the road, I have have had battles with the DVLA over this but they will not budge but I cannot see a commonsense reason for this stance as if the original vehicle was scrapped 20+ years ago what harm could it do?

Maybe they want to retain as many plates as possible, especially special ones... so they can sell them off in future

If you sent the V5 off stating that the vehicle was scrapped then, you have no chance, as the number in fact belongs to the DVLA and not you. If you have the V5 then it is not a problem as long as you don't give them too much info  ;)

I think it's a case of confirming identity with reclaiming old registrations. Since dvla know less about old Hondas then an enthusiasts group they defer to the owners group to confirm the vehicles identity is consistent with the actual vehicle presented. It's not unheard of for vehicles to get officially scrapped, only to be resurrected years later. Particularly when sorn was an annual renewal thing it was very tempting to scrap the identity even if the rotting hulk was still sat in the yard, then years later it gets sold and done up and at that stage dvla generally seem to just want it properly registered again, not that I would want to be trying to get their co operation, my dealings thus far with them have revealed they can be wildly inconsistent.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
