New to SOHC
« on: January 22, 2019, 10:22:12 AM »
Good morning all,

I've just registered for this  forum this morning as I am looking for some advice fairly urgently. I currently own a CB400/4 and a ST1100 Pan European. I'm considering purchasing a CB750/4 K1 which needs complete restoration. However, the bike in question was imported approximately 20 years ago but has never been registered with the DVLA. There is no paperwork with the bike to confirm that any duties have been paid etc. I'm told that this may result in it being given a 'Q' plate which I would not want. Can anyone on offer any advice about how I would go about getting an age related plate should I go ahead and purchase it.

Thanks for your replies in advance. Keith

Best thing to do Keith is call the DVLA and get some advice directly - they can be really helpful. Ideally you need to get the bike on the NOVA database which will
Then allow you to apply for a V5 and get an age related plate..

Hi and welcome! You would need a clear photograph of the frame number, and if fitted the frame id plate, and the engine number. It could then be officially dated by the VJMCC ( not sure of the current cost) and they would supply a dating letter which would satisfy DVLA into issuing an age related number plate when you are ready. Good thing is you won't even need to M.O.T. it to register it as it is over 40 years old.

Check with customs and excise as if you can not prove import duty was paid and there is no Nova certificate you could end up with a cost in the thousands.
To be honest with no Customs paperwork i would walk away as it could end up as spares only with a useless frame!!

Sounds like the bike for sale in Sheffield at the moment.....i could be wrong of course.Absolutely no paperwork is always a huge risk, especially on an import. Good luck.

Hi, as already stated, VJMC will provide a dating letter for the machine so long as you can show the vin number and engine number and also the main components i.e. wheel hubs etc are correct. The fact that it has no title deeds from the USA or wherever is not a problem. But if the DVLA cannot show that the duty has been paid this may cause an issue. You can ring up HMRC and give the vin number and have a check on the NOVA situation. Even if duty needs to be paid it is not likely to be much, it would depend on the cost of the vehicle when imported, but if the original purchase information is also missing i.e. a NOVA declaration was never started, it may mean that the NOVA clearance and hence the registration cannot proceed, in which case you can walk away from the deal.... worth a few phone calls first though, if the bike is worth restoring.

When Nova came in they also introduced a DAILY fine from when the bike entered the UK, even if it was only £5 a day, and i think it was more, that adds up to a large amount because they also add vat.

Hmmm .... in that case the original importer could find himself in a sticky situation should he ever try to register the vehicle... however, as a potential new owner, you could certainly call up to try and find out the situation without being liable for anything.

I just put into google "hmrc nova fine" and read some nice horror stories like the £69,000 fine plus £500 vat because the applicant could not prove the import date so HMRC decided to use manufacure date!!!!! Whoever it was won an apeal as the form asked the wrong questions but has that been fixed?

I was in a similar situaton looking at buying US import recently with no NOVA. I had note of original small time importer from PO's purchase back in 2011, who I spoke to and he could recall no certificate on record. (It was imported pre NOVA form system too). Emailèd VJMC who were extremely helpful. I thought it was a no go without NOVA but was told it would be doable but would have to pay 5% VAT on receipted purchase price.  They did email me info from their website which stated all this, so have a dig about on there but clear with proper authorities first against vehicle specifics. I did not go ahead with purchase in any case for other reasons but seemed straight forward.
One day I'll have the time to restore it, not just talk and dream....

That listing for the K1 has ended now - see the added additional comments by the seller - quite (actually a lot) snotty!

His extra comments made me laugh Phil. But, I could see his point, which bit of 'no paperwork' was difficult to understand. Looks like its gone to a breaker possibly.

You wouldn't really want to be buying off someone like that. Better to pay a bit more for a bike with the correct paperwork and let him keep his problems. That's got to be the most impatient bad mannered seller I have seen in quite a while.

What a k--b!

Those are all comments you can think, never say and definitely not put in writing. That will offend most people with any morals - unlike the seller involved I would suggest!
