Brake hoses

Hi, can anyone tell me if there is any difference between the brake hoses on a 1971 CB500K0 and a 1977 CB550K3.  I need brake hoses, but don’t know which of the two models my master cylinder and calliper came from.

You could check the part numbers on cmsl website..... or wait for somebody who already knows

the fittings are the same on both bikes but length may vary with different handlebar heights.

Thanks. I have checked part numbers and the first five digits on both appear to be the same. (45125 and 45126).

The 500 and the 550 should have two different length hose, it depends on if it is European or USA handle bars

the way honda part numbers work is, the first five numbers tell which part it is, in this case front brake hose upper and lower, and would be the same on any bike using a similar layout but does not mean it is the same. The middle three numbers apply to the exact model it was originally fitted to, for the 500 four its 323 for the 550k3 its 404 if i remember correctly. the last three numbers apply to modifications or different suppliers etc. so if the first 5 and the middle 3 numbers match there is a strong chance they will fit, but still not guaranteed due to changes in production. hope this helps (i was a honda parts guy years ago)

This is a pic of my 550K0, it originally had US bars and now has UK bars.

I haven't got round to replacing the brake hose yet, you can see how long it is in the pic.

For both of you it is easy to make up the braided hoses, i have pipe left but am running out of ends. The slight difficulty comes at the caliper end if you want to keep the steel pipe as you need to relieve a couple of threads on the steel pipe at the flexi end to get a seal. I can make up Kunifer pipes with a relieved nut.

I used the DS ones on my 500/4 K1. They are slightly longer than original, but I couldn't really find the orignal length ones anywhere.

I reused my old caliper thinking it was OK, but a waste of time. A small amount of corrosion, barely visible in the bottom of the groove for the seal meant a new caliper (piston side only) needed. Ditto the master cylinder. The only orignal parts remaining are the brake switch part and the static side of the caliper, .....and the bolts!

Just working on the same topic on 550 K1 1975, US model - plan to replace US bars by low UK (EU) bars. Does anyone know length of upper hose for UK (EU) bars?

Stock US one measured eye center - eye center is aprox 375mm.

just to add : I'm ordering custom made ones, so need to provide length...

This is the response I received from HEL Performance who were very helpful.

HBF2077
Upper 300mm centres 20° banjo on both ends
Lower 575mm 20°  / 90° male into caliper (replacing metal hard line)
 
HBF2827
Upper 385mm centres, straight banjo to 20° banjo
Lower 350mm centres, straight banjo to female (connecting to metal hard line)
 
If neither spec is suitable or needs amending I can do so, or we could copy the hoses you have already.

Clearly you could combine the upper from HBF2077 with the lower of HBF2827 if you have UK bars and want to retain the metal hard line to the Cali per.
