rocker cover swap 550
« on: February 04, 2019, 11:42:01 AM »
Hi, is it ok to swap a later model rocker cover (4 shafts) to an earlier one (8 shafts) ?
If so how are the 8 shafts secured ?

Thanks in advance Phil

Yes it fits and they are not secured which is the reason for the modification.

What you can do to try and stop them rotating, which wears the cover holes oval, is put an O ring in the shaft hole before fitting the polished end cap, the steel pin with sealing O rings traps the extra O ring between shaft and pin to make shaft tight.
This is an idea from the US site which i have never bothered to try but they seem to be paranoid about wear in the holes.

I think my shed has about 10 rocker covers, most cooked journal bearings or other faults, but I have yet to have a set of oval rocker shaft holes.... or indeed loose ones, far more common is the outside perimeter bolts having been over tightened and split the outside of the bolt hole off.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock
