£800 budget for a daily rider

A mate of mine is looking for a daily rider to commute 60mile a day but with a tiny budget of £800
He is a big old lump so no small bikes. When I asked what he wanted he didn't really know as hes new to bikes and he said something CBR'ish.
I'm thinking of something like a teapot.

Anyone know off or got something hiding in there garage?

Will be selling off a Thundercat 600 but, not for a couple of months yet  ;)

The cat is a good bike, always see them up forsale around the grand mark with good mileage, everyone wants the R6  :o

The world is his oyster. That's is a fair budget for a commuter. I've only ever spent that kind of money on 3 commuter bikes, every other one had been half that. The 2 most expensive were the shortest lived / highest cost per mile. My commute was for many years 44 mile round trip. Best of the bunch ghag I used, cb500/4- that devoured miles of commuting, all year round and bore the brunt of my young, free and single life of bike shows every weekend off, frequent popping over to my mates in Hereford, etc. Went round the clock a few times. One bike I will never sell. Other outstanding bike was Honda ntv650 rat bike. Again, ate miles, great fun. Extremely reliable and fun, surprisingly good in winter weather and needed less cleaning than the cb500/4 thanks to plastic mudguards etc. Matt black paint easy to re rattle can if any rust should appear. Cost me £400. Worst bikes were my BMW r80rt - fairing and handling were a1 brilliant, engine too, but electrics and gearbox / clutch both troublesome. Most expensive bike I ever bought, shame last owner polished it to look superb but 'fixed' stripped threads with superglue. Switchgear hopeless. Also had a BMW r90/6, same story, switchgear and replacement switchgear unreliable, generally horrid electrics - tons of relays in stupid places. Awesome engine. There was just always more money to spend on it somehow. Longest serving was a ca125 rebel, only retired it as I got a bit bored. It was tediously reliable and surprisingly peppy for a tiny bike. Proper workhorse, but the lack of centre stand was a pain in the butt.

I will just add, I always went over 15 years old to get classic insurance. Tourer over sports for mpg and comfort. In winter modern fat tyres as on the rebel a bit rubbish in frosty conditions as are city deamon tyres.

Just got a little bit more info out of him. Don't think he will go for anything to ratty and sounds like the cat is right up his ally.

The only thing i have found that is a weak point is the down pipes rot so, a good set of SS is advisable. Sticking brake pistons if it has been stilling for a while. That is the only problem i have ever had with mine in the past 3 years, also good on fuel  ;)

I know the 500 twin is an excellent bike.
We weighs around  20st and is 5.9 Hes commute is all duel carrageways Clacton to Braintree so hes commute is actully 50miles each way

I was just looking at that one looks a nice bike. Brakes have always been an issue on Yams

The blue spot brake will stop you quick, i just push the pistons out once a year for a good clean but, if used daily then no problem.

My Hondas are the same have to push them out and clean team yearly.
My Italian bikes with Brembo's are never an issue
