hi guys

well this polishing sure is hard work, frame , stands yokes, etc away getting powder coated sort thought i would try and clean up the forks,

got a couple of new questions, firstly draining fork oil, i can see the drain screw, fork seals are ok no sign of any leaks, how do you refill  is it purely down the forks ?, or is it total strip down job,  or should i leave well alone and just clean them up

also the springs do they wear out ( stay compressed ?) any measurement they should be ?

Refill by taking off the big nut on the top of the fork leg, I use a big basting (cookery type) calibrated pipette to do this, I would change the oil if I was you there may be a horrible gungy emulsion in there. Make sure that you put the correct amount in as well, don't want to blow them seals. The attached chart may help, found a load of them from the 70's in the loft.

thanks looks good, 155- 160 cc down each side sounds right

Remove drain screw, retire to middle of big field and pump up and down vigorously, standing well away from the drain screw.

This method is for all non environmentaly concious riders-----if you are so minded tie wrap a large placky bag around the fork lower before pumping, no need for middle of field then either

Just one other point the top bolt is under pressure from the spring so watch out when you get to the last few threads ! I usually use a big ring spanner and hold it down when I get to the last couple of threads.
