Rocker cover bolt arrangement
« on: March 12, 2019, 07:54:59 PM »
Hi all, hoping someone can point me in the direction of a good diagram showing the correct arrangement for the rocker cover bolts please, ie the correct length and grade of bolt for each location (23 of them if I'm counting right!).  It's not easy to decipher from the workshop manual diagram.
Mine are a complete dog's dinner - a mixture of different lengths plus a few cross-head machine screws and some missing altogether.  This is partly because some of the M6 holes in the cylinder head are stripped - are helicoils ok for dealing with these?
Many thanks, Darren.

Have a look at the micro fiche on CMSNL. They give all the details you need.
Here is the link to the fiche

Link to the CMSNL website. This gives the bolt lengths so should help you. Otherwise go to parts manual in the Alladins cave section on this forum. https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb400f-england_model14639/partslist/E01-1.html#.XIgQSGmnw0M
Timserts are a much better alternative to helicoils but it depends if there is enough metal around the damaged thread. I've used helicoils before in this area and they pulled out the next time I removed the rocker cover!
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies and advice, its probably just me but I was hoping there was a clearer diagram of the bolt positions, so I might make one and post it back here.  We use heli-coils quite regularly at work; I must admit I've never heard of Time-Sert's before but from a quick search they come highly recommended - will need to sus out if there's enough material in the casting around the holes.  Thanks again, Darren.

That sounds like an excellent idea. I bought a Yamiya engine case bolt kit when rebuilding my 400/4 engine, as I had a bit of a mish mash of bolt fitted by previous owners. I had to measure the depth of every hole and draw a map of which bolt fitted where, it was a bloody nightmare but got there in the end.

Outside tap for a 6mm timesert is 10mm so you need a lot of metal.

Diagram attached, pretty sure it's correct but would appreciate if someone would verify it please.  Presuming it's right I'm only 6 bolts short!
