Clutch basket cushion rubbers

Anybody have any thoughts on the material used to manufacture clutch basket cushion rubbers. The oil and temperatures involved could Viton be suitable if a little expensive?

There is a guy in OZ that makes from Viton for the Kawasaki 650/750 motors, i done my brothers 750 Zephyr basket, they worked a treat.

I have p.m. TTR400 regarding availability of cushion rubbers, he says -

Hi Mike,

Not at this time. the first batch i did could not hold up to the heat and hot oil. broke down after around 10.000 km's.

I have now sourced the correct material and will soon be doing a test etc.

Hmm, four years since the first batch proved problematic.  He must be as busy as I am...

Update on the clutch damper rubbers.

Yes i am always busy:) Plus it has not been at the top of my list.

I have tested many different materials and most have not held up. (tested by heating up engine oil). i have also bought cush rubber kits on the market for modern off road bikes etc and some of them also did not hold up to testing. the best material so far has been Viton.

Unfortunately being down here in Darkest Africa  no one suppliers this in the correct thickness, i just had a quote last month for the min qty of 1 sq metre at a cost of around GBP2500-3000 with import duties etc. so definitely won't be making any $'s from this.

As I am now getting a few emails for these kits. i have managed to find some Viton in smaller qty's. (but still have to import it). plus i also need some for my own bikes. when the material gets here i will do a few kits.

Couple of years ago i made some using Ertacetal, much harder with no give, so does not really act as a damper, but worked fine. (not tested for big mileage) would not be happy supplying these to paying customers. if anybody would like a set free of charge to try, (just cover postage) let me know and i'll put some in production for next month.

Yes i still do many parts for racers and road 400's. plus a few new parts that are not yet on my website.

Viton seemed to be the way to go so I have ordered a small sheet (200mm x 200mm) of correct thickness (10mm) and will have a go at fabricating one set to try. I,ll feed back on results.

I bought a set of the 'prototype' dampers from ttr400 about 4 years ago.
Still have the jiffy bag in the garage with S.A. stamps on it !
Since my bike has had so little use since I will have to strip the clutch again to take a peek !!
From memory the elastomer used was a blue moulded shape to match the original type.
My clutch needed rebuilding in any case as one of the rivet heads had sheared off.

My original ones are black in colour, don't know the material Honda used or obtained in production.
As I have not been able able to find any "off the shelf" items suitable, I'm currently working on having a die and punch fly press tool made from gauge plate to be able to fabricate some new ones from "Viton" sheet. I will feed back on success when iv'e tried some.

I need to find a solution for this soon. Sounds like a bag of spanners with the dip stick out I remember there being some free play there when I had it apart some years ago. The spare that I had of another bike was even worse so put the original back.


Has anyone removed and replaced the rivets?

I have removed the rivets by center punch marking and drilling on a pillar drill right through with pilot drill (1.5mm) then opening out to 5mm Dia.
As per other posts on this site I have then tapped the six rivet holes to Std M6 thread, intending to use suitable bolts with threadlock upon reassembly with new cushion rubbers.
Still currently working on fabrication of cushion rubbers.

You should have left the holes as they are the correct size to tap to M5.

With the M6, you may have to machine the heads thinner, as they might foul.
