steering lock
« on: March 21, 2019, 06:10:19 PM »
since there is a hole where the steering lock should be (into the steering stem - english style) i was wondering if anyone could confirm that 53600-404-611 is correct for a 1978 cb400f?

I have looked at cmsnl site for english version of parts list (and another i found on line) but there does not seem to be any lock on the diagramme!!

i know there are 3 types that fit different versions within different countries , one in the ignition switch, one under the steering stem and my one in the front frame tube but all of the locks i have seen on line seem to have a short 'bolt' that engages so just checking.

thanks

Dave Silver used to do an aftermarket one- which I feed as it was a lot cheaper.

i have looked at that one along with others that look the same but since i cannot find it listed on what i (think) is a parts manual for an english bike - and the lower steering lock on a usa/canada  looks the same as the one i need but has a shorter 'bolt' so i'm asking so i do not make a mistake.

I fitted this to my UK 1978 400. It fits and works fine.

I got mine from Frank as well for my UK 1978. But, my kit only came with the lock and spring. Wasn't a problem as the 400, as far as i am aware, never came with the swing door escutcheon anyway and Trig had to fit a special washer and pin, which we had anyway. Works a treat. Yes, but like i say, not an issue at all. Did you fit the swing door to yours?

Hi Julie. Yes I did fit the swing door. I have the washer like yours and was in two minds about which to fit as I couldn't remember what the original should be. My lock had nothing holding it in place for reference. The swing door rang a bell so fitted that. Can always change though.

as it's now officially classed as 'historic' (from 01/04) you have to fill out section (i think) 7 to change the taxation class so i sent it off with the v10 as i didn't want to stand around in line at a post office.

Ah, i see. I have quite a few to do after 1st April but my local post mistress does it all for me. I just ask her to change to historic , give her the log books and she does it all there and then on the computer....i don't like standing in a queue either, i suffer from queue rage 😀. I know a couple of people who sent their docs of to DVLA about 10 days ago for change to historic and DVLA sent the docs back with the amount to be paid to tax the bikes. Even though they are eligible for historic and FOC tax from April 1st, DVLA wouldn't do them as it was pre April 1st....bloody jobsworths.
