Cb550 gearbox removal
« on: June 12, 2019, 03:09:49 PM »
Hi got a 76 cb550 dropped the oil pan and 3 lugs of metal. Assuming these r off 3 or 4th gear.
Is it possible to flip the engine and strip without having to take the head off ? Any help is much appreciated thanks

If it's anything like the CB550, you can flip the engine and split the crankcase for a good look at the gearbox. Bill W.

Yes, you can. But, if you find the primary chain is knackered and has been attacking the internal oil gallery, obviously replace that while you have it open, but then you need to remove the crank, which can be done without removing the head, although you will need to remove the rockers/cover as well to release the camchain in order to get the crank out, and for the small costing the scheme of things, replace the camchain as well. Probably best to get a full gasket set, just in case you discover further horrors inside that may need the head off as well.

If it has been sitting for 20 years, you will find the rings stuck to the pistons and rust on the bores. Better to strip the whole engine  ;)
