Full gasket set (PFGS CB500F)
« on: June 16, 2019, 03:09:42 PM »
Hi, I am doing a rebuild of a 1971 CB500K0 and purchased a Full Gasket Set (PFGS CB500F) for the purpose.  However, there appears to be a significant number of engine o rings missing; 13 in total, including the four for the oil pump.  Has anyone else experienced this or have I just been unlucky on this occasion?

Many thanks

Raymond

Gasket sets don't usually contain the O rings for the oil pump, or quite a few other O rings needed for a 'full' job, so not unusual. If you want a full O ring overhaul kit for the oil pump, i sell them on my eBay page or just PM me as I do them slightly cheaper for forum members if you buy direct from me.

If you had a genuine Honda gasket kit B you got the 3 O rings between pump and crankcase, the pump cover O ring was never available from Honda as a part and it was only by carefull measuring i found a GL 1000 O ring that fitted, 46 x 2 if i remember correctly.

I have had a reply from David Silver Spares.  Basically they are deliberately misleading customers by advertising and selling as a full gasket set what the know is not a full gasket set.  They clearly don’t care if anyone complains, as their response is to seek further profit by offering to sell you the missing items, all of which are available, at a total cost of even more the the original “full” gasket set.  Buyer beware!  They clearly think that people have no option but to by from them, but they have certainly lost me as a customer.

If it helps Raymond, just let us know what bits you need and I'm sure we have them on the shelf. Don't feel obliged to buy anything from me, you are free to buy the parts you need from anyone you wish. Not many Full gasket sets, if any actually, come with everything you need to do a complete engine rebuild. It's not just DS. You just have to learn what set contains which parts.

Even genuine Honda full gasket sets when they were available didn't have all the seals and O rings you needed.

I don’t have a problem with what DS are selling.  What I object to is them knowingly misdescribing it as a full gasket set.  If they dropped the word full, and just sold it as a gasket set, I would be more than happy.  The fact that all suppliers are doing it does not make it right.  Rant over.

It is a full gasket set. O rings and seals are not gaskets.

But Dave silvers, Honda etc all refer to it as a full gasket engine set, it's the accepted correct term. The oil  seals are also separate, if we as apertures choose to do professional level  jobs on our machines if is down to us to learn the terminology. The oil pump is not the engine, nor does it use gaskets. Annoying yes, but I've rebuilt probably half a dozen cb500 or 550 engines and re used the oil pump o rings - not dissmalthed the oil pump most times and not had that area leak yet, appart from through the top of the oil pressure switch once - switch was faulty. I don't see merit to being loyal to a business like Dave Silvers or blacklisting them, sometimes they have the parts at best price, sometimes its elsewhere. Parts for these old bikes can be hard enough to find - not as bad as our 1960 landrover where the original engine was only around for 4 years or so so you keep being sent parts for the later engine which was around for decades.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

No it isn’t.  If o rings were not gaskets, then there would be no o rings in the gasket set.  This is a language / translation issue.  I have a background in aero engines, and dealt with the Japanese for a significant proportion of my career, and can assure you that the Japanese do describe an o ring as a gasket.  Normally, if it’s a static seal it’s a gasket, if its a rotational seal it’s a seal.  This is about commercial convenience nothing more.  As I said if they described what they sell as a gasket set I would not have a problem.  It is not a “full” gasket set.

I trained with Honda in Japan and the o rings in a gasket set is for the engine. Not the oil pump, starter motor and anything else that is not the engine  ;) ;)

Yes, I understand that and have the same understanding from the aerospace industry, where anything that can be replace in service was basically an accessory, including things such as fuel and hydraulic pumps etc.  However, many of the o rings that are not included in this set are engine parts, such as the o ring on the gearbox counter shaft and the oil passage plug and caps seals.

As Nurse Julie said, contact her and she holds thousands of o rings in viton and nitrile for SOHC's at a fraction of Honda prices  ;) ;)
