Play in caliper
« on: June 16, 2019, 12:50:44 PM »
I have about a millimetre of play when I put the brake pad back into the fixed caliper on my CB400F2, is that ok? I'm still forever having trouble with a squeak to make the public wince.

The clearance between fixed pad and disc should only be 0.15mm. A squeaky front brake is very common on the CB400/4. I tried everything to no avail but had the disc skimmed and that has sorted it for 95% of the time.

I cleaned up the pads and the insides of the caliper surfaces, applied red rubber grease and the squeal was completely  eradicated.
For a few days, it's back to normal.   I'm thinking about a shim of rubber on the back of the pad.  I'll report back when I've done it.
Just go back from a 120 mile round trip.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Mine only squeaks now when braking at very, very low speed. It used to be all the time and was an absolute nuisance.........and embarrassing.

I'll measure it properly and see. I've greased everything I dare to grease and the squeaking has stopped....touch wood!

Hi Julie
That is how I've set it up, I see I've been misunderstood though, what I mean is the sides of the brake pad and the play between that and the walls of the recess it sits in, I seem to have about a millimeter of play there....
