Tank badges
« on: July 21, 2019, 06:55:10 PM »
I'm about to refurb a pair of 500 tank badges..
Has any one got any pointers..
I've found humbrol satin white 130 is as near as damn it to the original colour ..
And I reckon I can brush flood the badges.

My question is are the original 323 badges brass colour all the way or is it a coating so if I flat back the raised surfaces on a face plate will it stay golden ? Or buff back through to monkey metal?

The black should be relatively straight forward to brush in?

Thanks in advance

Just done a set of mine , you can lightly sand the brass colour metal but if you go to far it is indeed monkey metal , i used a very fine wet & dry , hope that helps & good luck. ;D

In my "spare" time I work for a company that makes security doors. Some of them are powder coated.

Any powder-coating company should be able to do the job if you give them the RAL code.

After looking at my various options..
I have 2 sets of tank badges here
Both original old 70's
Both sets for one reason or another look very anemic on the gold....so without any cleaning they are already very silver..especially on the top edge
Looking at various pictures on the net of new ones they are very golden...

So I bought a new set ..broke the bank but they turned up today and are just perfect.

The tank has new paint and will be fitted with nos filler cap and a nos mole trim set and nos tap So a flaky set of badges would have just let it down...

I will probably at some point sell the spare sets on and recoupe some of my 90 quid outlay on the new ones

There we go

If the tank has new paint it probably deserves new badges

I think it's a modest investment that is well worth making. Do not spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar.

A wise  move  if all else is new.  All that would have happened is your eye would have been drawn to the old badges every time you looked at it.

That main colour is clearly the same stuff they use on ceramics.

Goes into the kiln all dull and comes out all primary colours!
