Stoppinbg a bottom case oil leak.
« on: July 28, 2019, 12:08:12 PM »
Hi all.
Have had a persistent oil leak around the big casting plug on my lower engine case. I've tried external repair using JB Weld which slowed it down, but still it persists.
Long story short I have now pulled the motor and have the offending case off the engine. All cleaned up, I tested the area by pouring a little oil around the plug on the inside of the case and left it to sit for a while. Sure enough, the leak appeared again. So now I know exactly where the problem is.
My question is, what next?
Is it safe to try and weld a repair? Would an application of JB Weld on the inside of the case be safer or a threat to clean oil in the future?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Best to get it welded, not uncommon to have a fracture in that location, often caused by over tightening the plug.

I don't think he is on about the sump bolt thread.
A picture may help us

Sorry for the confusion.
The leak is coming from the large casting plug that is directly below the transmission.
It's approx 65mm diameter and is not designed to be removed.

My concern is that welding the area will warp the case so I'm thinking of sealing the inside with JP Weld.
Will the JB stand the test of time living at the base of the transmission or might it come loose and stuff up the motor?
Anyone had any experience with this kind of issue?

Thanks

;) ah rite now we on the same page
yes it can be removed but I'm not sure if you can get a replacement o ring or one to fit it maybe try a large hydraulic engineering company for o ring I have never known them oil seals to fail?

The early ones had a o ring but, I have never come across a later type with a o ring. Never know one to leak and most of the later ones were just cast in to the bottom crank case.
You should never use any plastic weld or anything else inside the engine. Is the leak on the seam of the cast ? A close up would help on pin pointing a leak.

The leak appears to be on the seam somewhere.
