Kawasaki Z1 (11/72) original machine
« on: August 04, 2019, 08:52:54 PM »
Evening all. Might as well share this here before going over to the dark side (Z1 forum) to share there (that was a joke, but they don’t take well to discussing the CB750 over there lol).

Anyway, this is a very early ‘72 (73MY) Z1 that I brought in from the US last year. She’s a really interesting machine - will be up for sale very shortly to fund the be the glut of CB750 restorations.

Believe  it or not, these bikes are now in the £22-25k price range. Seems perverse, but that’s the market dictating prices I guess (don’t want to open a can of worms here so best we don’t get drawn into a protracted debate on prices here lol).

Few bits that aren’t strictly correct for the bike (should have ‘unstamped 4-4 pipes for example) but overall she’s a lovely mostly unrestored machine, and runs superbly.

But, given the choice between this and a CB750 I’d take the Honda all day long..

Anyway, pics...

Widowmakers or mobile donor machines is what we called the early Z1, felt like the frame had a loose hinge just behind the headstock and the single disc want enough. Still would give one garage space tho'

I loved em - certainly not the best handling bike I ever owned (changed mine for a 78 Suzuki GS1000HC - which was brilliant) but nothing could touch it in a straight line when it first came out (Koni's and a steering damper made it acceptable through the bends for my ability though) but very 'charismatic'. Wish I could have one now (not enough to sell all my SOHC's evidently)
Current Bikes:-
Kawasaki ZZR1100D3
Honda CB750K2
Honda CR750 Replica
Honda CB750K6 Cafe Racer Project
Kawasaki ZZR250 (1990)

Nice looking early survivor Z1 there James, good luck with the eventual sale.

As to prices, and also not wanting a debate, but excellent restored Z1, 'survivors' and rare models are fetching top money - a mate has a very nicely and correctly restored and numbered 73 UK model and one of only 14 known to survive of the original 40 (or so) imported into the UK in 73 before Kawasaki had set up the dealer networks. His is valued at £30+.

Here's his Z1 with my UK Z900 at the Stafford show a few years ago:

Bikes: 1970 US CB750 K1 and a UK 1976 Z900 A4
Cars:  1958 Triumph TR3A and a 1972 TR6

Are you trying to hint the Z1 is like a horsebox? it used to handle like one I suppose.

The answer to making Zeds handle is to eat more pies......... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3OQTU-kE2s&feature=youtu.be
