Supplier of original silver K1 tank badges..
« on: August 13, 2019, 01:01:07 PM »
Ordered from DS what was described as a right side 'OE' K1 tank badge as my K1's original one has a couple of slight scuff marks on it.

It's just arrived from DS, but I was expecting one with a silver chrome surround and bright white enamel wording, as per my original. But what I received has a gold chrome surround with cream coloured words....:-\

'Superseded' I was told and to be fair the picture on the website shows gold - DS will give me a refund.  So my fault for now only having half a brain and not noticing.  :-[

Can anyone please point me to a supplier of the correct OE silver badges or if you have a spare NOS or very good used one you would sell me I be grateful if you could please PM me.

Many thanks,
Andrew

DS sent me 87121300030 which is for the right side: https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB750K1-FOUR-1970-1971-USA/genuine-spares/part_168934/ - 87122300030 is the left side badge.

But both are gold surround and cream enameled wording, not silver and white.

I suspect that your tank badges may originally have had gold edging to the letters but this has faded with age or been polished away?  I thought exactly the same as you when I bought some new badges, my originals looked silver as well but after removing them from the tank and examining them I found that the rear of the badges were gold, and in places there was still a hint of gold where perhaps sunlight or polish couldn't reach. I may be completely wrong where your badges are concerned but that's the conclusion I came to re my K1 tank badges. The lettering on my badges is white as well :o

I think it's more a case of K2 badges being fitted to late K1 bikes. Some are gold, some are silver, Honda didn't care as long as something was fitted. OR...did Honda even fit the badges? Maybe the tanks came from the tank manufacturers, already with the badges, petcock and caps already fitted? Different tank manufacturers may have fitted different colored badges 🤔And then there is the color of the tank, was gold fitted to one paint color and silver to another color tank?

When I was at Honda in Japan, the tanks would arrive with all its components fitted, in a bubble wrap bag on stillage's. You never see any parts arriving in Honda boxes or bags  ;)

Many thanks for your insightful comments, on the back of which I've had a very close look at the tank badges and yes there are signs that they in fact did start life as gold back in 11/70.

Given they are original to the bike, I'm considering refitting them even though the right side one has a couple of slight scuff marks; this may be considered sacrilege against Menno's stunning paintwork....
