Master cylinder finish
« on: August 16, 2019, 07:47:16 PM »
I've just stripped the master cylinder as it was leaking badly.  I even managed to remove the dreaded circlip after a couple of hours with some help from my old mate, Percy Verence  :).
The PO had also painted the cylinder body gloss black, the paint was so thick it was crazing.
I have now stripped the old paint off, I know these were originally annodised(?) a sort of purple colour by Honda.  Does anyone know of a suitable paint I can use to replicate the original finish or better still, reccomend a company who can re-finish the metal? Is re-annodising an option?

Couple of places with potential to help if they'll look at one off items.

https://www.anodising.com/

https://www.badgeranodising.co.uk/services/anodising-colour-anodising

Both look like they can produce a black finish and maybe worth a chat.

Going to a specialist could end up landing you with the most expensive master cyl in the world... have you considered buying a replacement in better condition...? Something like this maybe...

Purple ? Black anodise or strip M/C down, dunk in thinners for a hour, mop, under coat and then a satin top coat  ;)

Try to find a suitable colour of special caliper paint as they are resistant to brake fluid spills.

I used VHT satin black caliper paint SP739 and VHT primer on my master cylinder. It's brake fluid resistant and has to be baked in the oven at 90 deg C for a hour to activate the hardner. Looks good and time will tell if it's brake fluid resistant.

Thanks all.
The anodising route does look to be an expensive option. I'll go with the suggestion to repaint using VHT caliper paint in satin black. As GiannisFour points out, the colour has probably changed due to sunlight.  The 'purple' colour I found was under the rubber boot of the union so figured this was its original colour.
I could have bought a new repro caliper for £28 (the rebuild kit for the existing caliper was £15!) but I wanted to keep the bike as original as I can and its always satisfying to bring something back from the dead :)
