Master cylinder for cafe racer bars.
« on: August 17, 2019, 10:47:30 AM »
I've fitted some café racer bars/ Laverda type to the 400/4 I'm very slowly turning into a café racer but a thought has just struck me that the master cylinder when / if fitted as is would be at quite an angle and could possibly not have enough brake fluid in it if leaning over too far causing an air lock in the system.
Which prompts a couple of questions:-

Has anyone done this without modifying the master cylinder?
Am I worrying unnecessarily?
Are there special master cylinders for such a set up?
Thanks in anticipation.

👍, yes that was the colour of mine under the rubber boot. I thought it was anodised but ir rubs off very easily do maybe its another form of coating or paint? Anyway, it's going to be painted with VHT satin black caliper paint and baked in the oven with the spuds and Yorkshire puds!

I think Laverda 120 is correct,  the originals apoear anodised.

It's just dyed as far as I know, most black colouring isn't true black but just black enough to convince our eyes that no other colour is present.

https://www.caswelleurope.co.uk/anodizing-dyes/ shows a dye suppliers to anodising industry for interest.

As the original fades it will show some of the component incorporated in the dye,  usually elements of blue,  but often red or yellow that can shows as a golden hint when faded.  Depends which component is the most stable over time as to which colour is left.  It's a bit like those pictures you'd see in hair stylists windows that have faded usually to bright cyan when left too long.

I had to laugh at your last comment Nigel. I remember going into a barbers in my teens, pointing to a photo on the wall of a particular style and saying 'Can I have mine like that'? The resulting cut looked nothing like the photo!!!
Back to the caliper, yes it gave off a metallic look so probably faded over 40 years despite not being in sunlight but under a rubber boot.

Ensuring the rubber baffle / membrane is fitted into the master cyl should help to keep the fluid in the right area and prevent it from sloshing about.
