Progress on my 'Rehab' 11/70 K1
« on: August 20, 2019, 07:02:33 PM »
I've been convalescing at home since early July after my stroke and one of my set rehab goals was to clean and polish various parts of the 11/70 K1. It's now starting to come along nicely. Over the last few days I've been carefully removing and primer and paint from the petrol cap and lock brackets as the cap and lock wouldn’t fit over Mennos lovely thick paint. I finally got it all trial fitted and painted the bare steel with a thin mix of my Triumph TR6's Pimento red and Humbrol gloss black (managed a pretty close match to the candy ruby red) to protect the exposed metal, most of which you don’t see anyway.

All pretty nerve wracking stuff and the level of concentration was rather tiring, so could only manage a few hours a day........but I'm very happy with final fit and even though that bloody little plastic hinge washer did it's best to give me another stroke, I got the bugger fitted eventually!

Below are few photos of before, during and after - I reused the cap lock as a it's nicely patinated (like the rest of the bike), but got the original petrol cap rechromed as the masak was badly pitted and cleaned and rebuilt the seal/spring/breather plate thingy, as it all belongs to the bike was saveable - but I decided to order tank new badges and lower tank strips as the damaged and faded originals would not have looked very nice against the new paintwork.

Next on the 'rehab list' is to complete fitting up the tank 'furniture'........and then get back to cleaning the rest of the bike. It's just a shame that I won't be able to ride it when it's finished until at least next July/August as the DVLA now have my licence. :'(

The stuff on the inside of the filler neck isn't rust, it's where Menno touched the tank during liner application and nothing to worry about:

Many thanks for the encouragement folks, appreciated. I'm enjoying the time and space to get on with things, if not not the circumstances.....

Oddjob, I've tried to answer your questions below in red font:

Couple of questions as I'll be doing this as well.

Why does your petrol cap have a screw holding the innards on? all mine are riveted, I have 3 BTW.  This was the original petrol cap fitted to the bike (it's only got 20,648 miles from new) - according to the Parts Book, the K0 and K1 spring plates were screw fitted - I believe later models (from K2?) the spring plates were riveted and these are the only OE ones available from DS.

How much to chrome the cap? and who did it? The cap cost me £60 from Silvabronze in Alton, Hants (just 20 mins away) - http://www.beckworth.net/
Thinking whether to have 2 of my old ones redone but if it's cheaper to buy new I'll fit a new one.  I did briefly consider buying a new OE cap from DS (£73 inc vat and del) but the spring plate is riveted and I wanted to keep my original cap, so it worked out well in terms of cost and originality. DS also sell repro caps which are screwed and include the pin and thumb latch at £61, but I didn't want a repro. I have some spare seals around for the caps which is handy cause the old ones are kinda perished.

Have you used rivets to hold the cap/lock on? or the ones which use small circlips? If rivets how did you expend them?
No, no rivets or circlips are used to fit the lockable latch, it is secured in place with with a threaded pin which screws into a retaining plate - the circlips are used to hold on the pin for the thumb latch which was a safety recall - have a look at this website, scroll down to No '4' which explains - http://honda750expert.com/ - it's a useful site, although even with my basic knowledge I'm not sure how accurate some of the information is? Thumb latches are available on eBay which show the component parts:  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Honda-Fuel-Cap-Latch-Lock-CB200-CB360-CB400f-CB500-CB550-CB750-K-F-Gas-Tank/122752992358?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Looking good Andrew and nerve wracking to work on a newly painted tank. As Julie and Morrey have already said, this is good physical and mental therapy. Next summer will soon come round, keep the photos coming 👍.

Thanks fellas,

Been moulding the tanks badges this morning - left is nice fit, but the right is proving to be a right pain in the arse, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.......I'll get there!  ::)

Cheers, Andrew

Nice work andrew

Thank Pete,

We both know that sitting underneath all this is a great unmolested original K1.

Finally got the tank badges fitted, those and fitting petrol cap and lock was a pretty nervey thing against Menno's lovely paint...... I'm finally happy with the fit and couldn't resist resting the tank on the frame for the effect.  ::)

Looking forward to seeing all the painted parts eventually fitted up.......much more stuff to do before that happens though.
