Very cool, shame modern F1 is now so boring!
The track looks like Goodwood and the silver Spitfire is the same plane currently undertaking the round the world tour.
I bet working on the patterns for the replica Merc must have been a dream job Rich?

For us “non anoraks” (ie normal people), what is the Merc?

Looks like a W125 circa 1937 era.

I only know that,  if it's right,  because it was my dad's favourite period of grand prix cars.

Bang on k2-k6 w125. that is at Goodwood and one of the repros.
Our customer just used to bring great chunks of it to us and say 'copy that' kept us busy for a couple of years,
the cylinder block was fabricated around cast exhaust/combustion chamber/inlet and cylinder casting.

I've not seen that Merc,  but did see two of the Auto Unions that you said you were also involved with recreating Rich. They were at Goodwood FOS last time I was there,  quite spectacular and similarly era too.

It's interesting that the era of that original Merc probably was similar in domination to the current one,  which superficially seems boring. But today the media channels are so tightly controlled that most of the exiting stuff is not seen, or edited away by people that just don't know what is interesting.

You'll not often see even photos like this above (Rosberg in a Merc) as the commentary generally of most sports is so hyped up and dramatised that it misses the stuff that interests genuine followers of whichever sport you like.
