550 F1 pod air filters
« on: October 11, 2019, 05:31:10 PM »
Hi all
Probably an old topic
Looking for pod air filters to fit my 1976 550 F1
All I can find to fit are flat pancake style ones used for some small Chinese machines and quad bikes
Anyone know if these are suitable ?

They don't like to run on pods, that is why Honda never made them. Stick to the standard air box and save yourself a lot of grief  ;)

Cheers Trigger, I have heard that the pods are a problem but Iam dealing with a £50 project bike that came already 'cafe racered ' basically an engine ,frame, wheels, tank and forks and nothing else....and Iam on a budget !

The budget is the bad bit, sets of jets dont come cheap for those carbs

I have a set of S&b ( similar to k&n ) conical filters with chrome end caps, I had them fitted to my 500/4 for a few weeks, bloody awful things, fit fine etc, but, outside pair get damp and the bike then runs rough, even worse in snow and ice. Not sure where they are exactly now, handy to bench test an engine but truly a pain in the backside to live with. Also a job and a half to get jetting right. Best system I have had was a stock setup right back to the filter box, then a genuine K&n filter  that is about the same size as the stock filter box. That released a few more horses, though I suspect it was rejetted to suit and ran a very free flowing exhaust.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

I've been running on S&M filters for twenty years and they seem fine to me.  I do have bigger jets though and 4-1 exhaust, had the carbs balanced by a bike shop.  Always been fine.
