40 Year Confusion.
« on: October 16, 2019, 06:59:38 PM »
Hi, Can anybody shed any light on this 40 year old bike rule for gaining status of VHI. I have just taxed my CB550K3 and it set me back £66, despite declaring the bike to be 40 year since first registration. (Feb 1979) Although strangely enough I managed to tax a vehicle that didn’t have a current MOT. Not wanting to question the teller in the post office I thought I would contact DVLA when I arrived home. I contacted the very helpful assistant on the online chat facility on DVLA web site and after a few lines back and fore she informed me that my bike would eligible for VHI IN April 2020. I informed her that I was not any clearer on the 40 year old ruling reminding her that my bike would be 41years and 2months old then. Although my bike was actually built in 1977. Which I am now in the process of having to prove.
Anybody else faced a similar dilemma.

Yours is not eligible until April 1st next year (2020). At present only bikes registered or manufactured prior to Jan 1st 79 are eligible. But, if you can prove by dating cert its a 77 manufacture, it is eligible now. I assume its an import and just shows the date of 1st reg in the UK and not the date of manufacture on the log book and that is what is recorded at DVLA. But in any case, it has to be in its 41st year to be eligible for VHI but no MOT is needed after it turns 40, you couldn't make it up, could you 🙄🙄🙄. A dating certificate from VJMC will sort it out no problem. Once registered as VHI you will get a refund on any unused months of road duty.

Thanks for the info regarding 40 year confusion. I think I am being stupid, I thought I was into the 41st year. If my bike was 1 year old in 1980, it has to be 41 in 2020. If I am wrong please give me a slap! I am already on the case with contacting Honda regarding dating. The bike was sold brand new locally and sat in the showroom here for quite some time. Unfortunately the V5C does not state year of manufacture but date of registration which in my case there is quite a bit of difference. As far as I can gather the K4 supersceded the K3 in 1978.

Yes, it has to be OVER 40 years old, so in its 41st year on the April 1st to qualify. Because yours was registered in Feb 79 and the criteria says registered prior to Jan 1st in that year (so in effect the year before,) its still not eligible. Not sure why your log book hasn't got date of manufacture on it, that is very unusual for a 1st registered UK bike (ie, not an import), most strange. We never had the K4 imported in to the UK market, we just had the K3 until stock dried up. The CB550/4 K3 was a very slow seller in the UK.

Hi Johnny,
Yes, a real dog’s breakfast this one but as Julie says, if you can prove date of manufacture as 1977, then they will refund whole months only of the tax you paid after it’s declared Historic.  Also it’s only MOT exempt once the V5c says Historic.  The reason you got away with taxing it is because your postcode indicates that you live on an Island with no convenient method (bridge, tunnel etc) of taking it to Mainland GB.

The best result anyone can get is with a vehicle 40 years and 3 months old, so why it’s stated as 40 years beats me!

Another thing that’s just happened to me when I taxed my recently finished (well, almost) Red 400/4 which hasn’t been on the road since 1987, was that Chris took the docs it into the Post Office in Kirkwall on 9th Oct and the tax now shows as renewal due 1st Nov 2020 which is 13 months of tax.  I rang DVLA and they say it’s OK??

On the plus side, Peter James now list my bikes on agreed value until 2099, so I’ll be 150 by then!  When I pointed this apparent typo out, they said that is their new system but you can increase anytime you wish - saves them paperwork.

Ian

Just a thought Johnny, can Stevie R do a dating cert via Orkney Vintage Club ?

Thanks for replies Julie and Ian. Interesting. I read on different forums that as soon as a bike is 40 years old it is eligible for VHI. But not the case. Was yours taxed from the beginning of October as well Ian? Yes I don’t remember any K4s about here Julie. In fact I think I have the only K3 that was in Orkney certainly in the late 70s and 80s. The 400s and the 750s of the era were very successful. I don’t think the CB650 that followed was all that popular either. Possibly Ian regarding Stevie. Good call, I will enquire.

Hi Johnny,
Yes, taxed from 1st Oct, so as I say, 13 months - I know it’s free anyway but I still think someone cocked up. When a vehicle has not been previously taxed up to the end of the preceding month, you can only tax from the beginning of the month you are applying in. They will let you complete the on line system a couple of days early but it still ain’t taxed for those days.

The bike’s looking great, hope to see it ‘in the metal’ soon.

Club AGM next Tuesday - might see you there,
Ian

I read on different forums…

There’s your problem [insert smug smiley here]

Should have just asked Julie.

Maybe I should set up an “Ask Julie” board.
