Advice needed.
« on: December 07, 2019, 10:02:30 AM »
Hi All,
As the title says, advice needed from people who know more than me (that's probably everyone!).
My brother in law is looking to bid on this 250k4
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/honda-cb250-k4-project/274130540689?hash=item3fd3741891:g:N4kAAOSwADVd6ove
He has asked me what I think. Trouble is I know nothing about them.
Your thoughts on this bike and any pitfalls when buying one would be appreciated. Also are parts easy to come by?
John

You have to look past the bling on this one, it is listed as a project. Wiring looks to have wrong bullets and has been messed about with, no seat in the picture, carbs ? You can see that all the chrome bolts are pitted on the bolts. Don't know if the tank is lined.
I would not bid on a bike like this until I have seen it up close and personal and it would have to be cheap.

These 250 engines had cam and cam chain problems

I did think that Roy. Makes you wonder how much effort went into the work he's done on the bike.

Biggest problem is they were learner bikes so got thrashed and neglected. If pushed hard from cold the rings can shatter and if the centrifugal oil filter not cleaned the cam siezes, then when rebuilt incorrectly or with "goo" they sieze again.
Rebuilt properly, run properly and serviced right they are a nice reliable(ish) ride.

After carefully looking I can say this bike has had a repaint.
The neck of the gastank is painted as well.
That would be the first thing to do; free the paint on top of the neck so that the seal from the cap rests on bare metal.

With the rise in value of 'survivor' bikes and cars I have noticed that some sellers are becoming confused (deliberatly or otherwise?) between 'original condition' and 'original specification'........ ???
