Removing petrol tank cap.
« on: January 17, 2020, 08:43:50 AM »
Morning. I am getting my tank and panels ready for posting to Menno for re painting. I am having trouble working out how to get the pin things out to remove the tank cap and fittings.  Do they just pull out or is it more complicated than that? Also can I re use them?

If you look closley one end is domed and the other hollow, the hollow end is"riveted" over to stop it comming out. You need to carefully remove that riveting to get the pin out which means you need a new one which last time i looked were still available from Honda, however the pin for the catch has been discontinued as Honda came out with a locking catch "kit" held by a screw, all because of US and Mr Nader.

Thanks Bryanj. Thought it wouldn’t be straightforward. 😀 Do you know if I can get those bits from Silvers?

Silvers did do the pins for the cap and i saw replica catch "kits" on ebay but not sure if they had a rivet or a small diameter stainless nut and bolt. The locking "kit" is a 400 four part number and a bit dear. Given time i can look up the part numbers for you.

I just did a quick search and if Menno is painting your tank you might consider
113921477373 on ebay

That looks good Bryanj. My original one is pitted and a bit rusty. That new one would solve the problem with the pins as well.

Silvers did do the rivet type pin but I just used a small stainless steel dome head bolt and a nyloc nut.

Thanks gtmdriver. Sounds like a good idea. I think it will probably come down to what my accountant says ( the wife) whether it’s a nice new cap or just the cost of a couple of new pins. 😀

Thanks Oddjob. It’s amazing how many companies there are on the internet making bits and pieces for these old bikes. As you say the last one looks very good value. Bryanj also pointed that one out to me.
