Refitting Cb500 four carbs
« on: February 03, 2020, 01:24:08 PM »
Hi

I've taken mine off to get them sorted but getting them off and out was quite a struggle. What methods do the learned members suggest as the best way to refit them?

Cheers, Bob

Loosen the  airbox.
Use a heat gun to soften the rubbers

A pot of red rubber grease helps no end. Plus the hairdryer or a pan of boiling water to soften the rubbers.

I`ve had the carbs off my 550 3 times in as many weeks now (long story). I have found you can get the outer airbox rubbers out from the bike after releasing the clamps. The 2 inner ones I pop into the airbox. Keep clutch cable clear and the carbs slide in and out from rhs. The rubbers on my bike are new and I also use red rubber grease. I perfected this method after many a grazed knuckle.

Very hard to re glue the 2 inner ones once you have retrieved them from the air box  ;)

If you get a old set of rubbers and look in the groove, you will see the remains of a brown adhesive. It is also on the chamber to airbox rubber  ;)

Cheers for that. Kind of makes my method a tad impractical.

Are you sure it's glue? I always thought it was either vaseline or some sort of silicone paste. I see no harm NOT to glue them.

Mine aren't stuck and I noticed that the 2 outer ones have a pip on the edge and there is a similar one on the airbox. I assume that they are supposed to line up?

The 2 outer ones are handed.
