CB550 handlebar width
« on: February 17, 2020, 09:55:21 AM »
Hi All

Could anyone out there tell me the std handlebar width for a cb550f1 I have wider straight bars on my brat style and the engine revs on full lock. Just looking into having new longer cables made and would be good to know the std bar width so I can work out how much longer to get them made.

Many thanks all

Richard

Hi Again

Could anyone also clarify a detail on the throttle return cable please?

My current return cable at the carb end has a shaped/dished washer that goes around the the mount on the butterfly mount.

It seems that mine is on the wrong way around, meaning the dish of the washer does not locate around the mount correctly.

I notice on David silver and cms photos that they are indeed this way around. However in photos in the service manuals they are shown the other way around.

Anyone come across this issue before? I am having new cables made slightly longer and want to be sure of this detail.

Please see attached photo

Richard

I don't know the answer to your cable question, but the handlebar width should be about 835mm or 32.9 in. The bars are the widest part of the bike unless the mirrors stick out a bit further, in which case I'm talking bollocks! 😊

Hi Julie.

Thanks for the photos.

So I can take it from the pics that either will work. It strikes me that having it on the top of the mount does make more sense though.

Think I’ll go ahead with having it opposite to as it is currently.

Thanks for the help AGAIN!

Thinking about the bar width, is it a UK model with standard low bars or a USA model with standard high bars 🤔

It WAS! The uk spec. Not much left if the original front end though.

I had an issue with the bike revving on full lock. I’m just getting some new cables made up with a bit extra in the length, but it would be nice to know how much wider my bars are than the std.

Don’t want to end up with them too long. My bars measure 760mm or 30” from bar end to bar end.

Thanks AGAIN! Ken

Yes! this is starting to become apparent. The previous owner had mounted the voltage rectifier just where the throttle cables run and I think this could be the problem more than the length. hard to tell at this stage as its in bits. Think I may leave buying one off cables for now. The bank balance is already suffering from this project!!

The Original bars on my UK spec CB550F measure approx 100mm rise from c/l of bar clamp to top of bars and approx 820mm wide.
These bars were removed to fit clubman bars as a cafe racer style.
Hope this helps.
