CMS now have 4 into 4 exhaust systems back in stock
« on: March 24, 2020, 02:47:22 PM »
Just got an e-mail from CMS saying they have now got some stock of these, not saying how many they have just that they are limited in number.

Just ordered my set for the L reg I'm currently restoring. Didn't want to order it right now but couldn't take the chance they would go out of stock again. Might have to sell some of my stock of black main shell bearings to go toward the cost. 1074 euros all in including free shipping.

Thanks Oddjob for the information just ordered a set, after checking with Silvers who said they do not currently have a delivery date. I wished I had bought a set last year and didn't want to miss this opportunity of getting one this time.

Gents, can you confirm these pipes fits well onto original brackets?
I'm thinking also to order them..

AFAIK Erny, they fit fine with OE brackets, aftermarket brackets however seem to be problematic as they aren't bent the same as the OE brackets.

In my experience the ‘repro’ pipes (not from this latest batch of production) you do sometimes have some fitting / alignment issues - even with original Honda mounting brackets.

But, given the lack alternatives (or lack of OE pipes) it’s a small compromise - and you will just need to ‘massage’ them into place.

If I needed HM323 pipes I wouldn’t hesitate and suggest you get them before they sell out as they inevitably will...

I seem to remember a couple of guys had some issues with fitting, BUT it turned out the bikes concerned had been involved in incidents/offs where the footrest mounting loop (which is also where the silencer mounting bracket fits) had become slightly bent inwards. Chances are if you have difficulty with them it's probably worth checking, as a lot can happen in 40+ years and several owners.

My experience was based on removing genuine (near NOS) Honda HM323’s and fitting the repo parts to the same bike (transferring the brackets across). The fitment was definitely subtly different and tolerances on the repro set were nowhere near Honda standards. But, they were excellent quality imho (felt much heavier than the genuine parts as well, so I assume used a slightly thicker grade of material in their construction).

I wouldn’t hesitate in getting them personally if I needed them and let's face it they look superb....

Well this week alone I've ordered a set of repro pipes, a NOS tacho for a CB550F2 as I have those clocks fitted to my 500 and just bought a NOS seat on E-Bay. Been an expensive week.

The exhaust system arrived this morning, all in one box unlike the genuine Honda system which were in 4 separate boxes. Quick service especially with the virus around etc

Will open it shortly to see what they look like, will report when I have.

Well just opened the box and checked one of the exhausts. The large box contains 4 separate boxes, exactly like the Honda box. There is a note inside the box saying that the entire system has been test fitted on a jig to ensure it fits. Inside the separate box is the exhaust inside a large bubble wrap bag. Word of warning here, the box is sealed with very large brass looking staples, I've removed them all as when I was putting the exhaust back after checking it I caught the end of my finger on the 2 I had left fitted and almost ripped my fingernail off. If it can do that there is also a chance they can scratch the chrome of the exhaust so remove them all and reseal with tape is my advice.

So how's the exhaust look, in a word, brilliant. Chrome is very deep and TBH better than the Honda chrome, no marks at all on the one I've checked and unless I come back and say so that would include the other 3 as well. Clearly double skinned headers. Unlike the Honda exhausts the chrome covers the reverse side of the exhaust section. Honda left this a sort of partial chrome, very dull and I ended up spraying my originals with zinc paint in order to protect them better. The chrome on the reverse side is as good as on the outside section. The exhausts have the warning imprinted onto the reverse like the CB550 US version. This exhaust has the main stand rubber mount and even that is brightly chromed.

In short this is an exceptional copy, IMO better than the original and I know that's saying something. I really can't fault it, how it fits will be the test though and that won't be for a GOOD while yet. Maybe someone else who has bought this new system can give more feedback on that. I know the old CMS repros had a few problems with fitting so maybe they have corrected them for this production run. Hence why I'd like someone who has bought one after me to say how they fit.
