Triumph T3 900
« on: March 26, 2020, 08:36:47 PM »
I have been looking at one of these as they seem to have come down to affordable prices.  Does anyone have experience of them, from what I have read they seem pretty practical?

e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/triumph-t300-900-trident-sprint/283825385801?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

I had one for 6 years. Great bikes , very torquey engine but they carry their weight quite high.
The early engines have an access plate for the sprag clutch on the starter, but the later ones don't and you have to split the cases to fix the bloody thing!

I had one too. A Trident Sprint just like the one in the photo (but red).

I loved the sound it made and it was all day comfy.

Iffy batteries destroyed the sprag clutch so make sure it has either been done or there are no funny noises on startup.

I still have my original one that I bought new in 1993, see attached.

Lovely torquey engine. They are a bit top heavy particularly with a full tank.

The only major problem, as has been raised, with the 1st gen ones, with the detachable plate above, onboard of the clutch housing, is the starter sprag clutch which if it has not been done can be a problem, loud clunk when trying to start the engine initially but will then just fail. Was a recognised manufacturing/design issue that Triumph assisted with for a number of years on a case by case basis. Not a difficult job to do if you are a handy mechanic, see link,

Parts still available at around the £400 mark for the parts but labour will be high if you have to pay somebody and could end up costing more than the bike. So you need to check that it has been done or that there are no clunks and bangs with repeated starts. Again as has been indicated, problem is exacerbated with a low battery charge.
