Tank Rust Removal
« on: May 05, 2020, 11:26:49 AM »
So … as per my project thread, I now need to tackle my tank. After viewing other topics and seeking advice in the relevant social media groups, I have been warned of sealing the tank and using acids which may be too aggressive and cause damage to the parent metal.

I have attached pics of the inside of my tank. This is the first bike I've done so I have no idea how bad mine is by comparison.

Any tips on how to tackle this would be gratefully received!

Thanks.

I am a bit of a maverick but I would say it doesn't look too bad.  If it were mine I would just rinse it out then use an inline filter.

Seen a lot, lot worse than that. I would mix up a bucket of citric acid / de ionised water, ½ fill the tank, give it a good shake around and empty it and then fill with petrol and ride off in to the sunset 😊

That’s is not bad at all. Great product you may want to consider for light de-rust is Bilt Hamber Deox-C. It’s safe on paint as well and is bio-degradable so you can dispose easily after use (or just store it for further de-rust duties).

Plus 1 on the Deox-C James .. been using it for years as we have it at work. I suspect that the active chemical in it is citric acid though.
It's certainly very gentle on the metal.

Never line your tank it will be the last time you use the tank, when it fails and it certainly will it cannot be removed, so I recommend an acid wash with pool acid diluted 50:50 followed by neutralize with baking soda solution which should be left in the tank for 1 day

Oh no, please don't tell me that. I'm trying to sort a tank now that has been lined, its all flaking off in big lumps. The annoying thing is its a good tank that someone couldn't get the taps to seal so they lined it. I was going to fill it with Acetone for a week.

Lined tanks are very difficult to repair try the acetone see if it softens the liner this is precisely why it shouldn’t be used you could cut the underneath of the tank open to do the job but that would require a complete repaint etc

I had two different liners fail on my CB750, ruining two otherwise perfect paint jobs.

After that i bit the bullet and bought a new one (perfect replica) from David Silver.

It may come to cutting the bottom out of this tank anyway, as I'm stripping the old paint back I'm finding filler, if the bottom is out I can knock the dents out too.
