Still got problems with 350F clutch
« on: May 02, 2020, 06:50:50 PM »
Going to need some inspiration with this. I had a good clutch with Cruzinimage plates that were prone to sticking. Decided to change them for better plates but now cannot get it to adjust correctly. It drags badly and makes it difficult to change gear and impossible to find neutral. After messing for ages I put the Cruzinimage plates back in but the result is the same. Had it in and out 4 times now looking for the problem but I appear to have missed something, getting very frustrated with it to be honest. Question, should there be a ball bearing under the clutch push rod. The parts book says not, just not sure, it looks like it's not lifting enough. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

It sounds like you have disturbed the lifter mechanism somehow Roy when you took the clutch cover off.  I'm not familiar with the 350 as it differs to the 400/4 but I guess the principle is the same.  If the Cruzinimage plates were good before and now they are not its not the plates at fault but the operating mechanism. Are all the shims in place on the clutch basket, you haven't got one sticking to the new plates have you when you took them out? Its one of those problems where you have to re-trace your steps, you'll come up with the solution when you walk away from it for an evening.

Thanks for the input. Just shut the garage door on it last night and went and did something else.

This morning I had a look from a different position. I thought the clutch was originally okay so why am I in here changing it, maybe it wasn't okay. It did operate acceptably but the plates had a habit of sticking tight overnight. So this morning I took it all apart again and counted the bits against the parts list to make sure nothing was missing or extra, that was okay so it must be something in the assembly. So this time I removed everything that is associated with the clutch and checked the assembly against the parts drawing and there it was. A simple error when I built the engine 2 years ago and didn't notice.

Item 2 on the drawing was inserted from the rear instead of from the front. No idea how it worked like that, I must have just found a spot in the setup where it just about worked. So that found I assembled it with the new EBC plates and Wemoto steels and surprise surprise the best 350F clutch ever. All my own fault from a small error years ago. What a dumbass.

Roy are the friction plates in the right order, the last one in has a narrower band of friction material, if in the the wrong way binds on the conical spring, when i got mine the time served Tech that re-commissioned it had stripped the clutch to free it off and put the plates back in the wrong way round, i had the same problems as you, i sorted them out and no problems from then on.

No problems with the plates kev. It was the basket bush in the wrong way round. My fault entirely just didn't notice the simple mistake. Thank heavens for exploded parts drawings. Clutch is absolutely spot on now.

Have you downloaded a parts mañuel?  It comes in handy sometimes.
