CB400F trip reset grommet installation order
« on: May 11, 2020, 09:17:16 AM »
Hi all,

I've been keeping myself busy with my restoration, and have just stripped and repainted my clocks.

The trip reset meter grommet on the speedo was wrecked, and it looks like cb750faces is out of stock until July(?).

I'd like to put the speedo back together now, and install the grommet later when they're available.

Will this work, or does the grommet need to be installed before reassembling the speedo?

Cheers,

Ken

The grommet is glued to the inside of the body and plus the fact you can't you can't get the grommet over the knob. You can't usually remove the knob from the shaft without damage.

Thanks, yeah, I did have to destroy the knob taking it off, unfortunately.

So now when I'm putting it back together, I just have the bare shaft. I don't want to crimp down the ring only to find that I can't install the grommet after sealing the whole thing up.

I started my clocks. I had to destroy the black knob taking it off. It was suggested that toothpaste top, filled and blacked could be a good substitute.

Some tubes of glue have tops about the right size and already black. ☺

;D Making them is the easy bit, its getting the time to do it that’s hard. I’ve not even got a spare minute to do my own stuff  :-[

Trust me. We understand.

I don’t pretend to be skilled enough to make stuff.

I am a complete  novice on the lathe but teaching myself to use one during lockdown  (see my other post today) .... How do you achieve the knurling on that knob?
