400 Four Honda side cover paint stripping
« on: May 17, 2020, 01:59:32 PM »
Hi, Found something i can do during 'lockdown' (it's still on in Scotland). I would like to remove the old badly applied paint on the side covers and re-spray. Not sure if ordinary paint stripper will harm the plastic side covers or not. Can someone confirm damage/no damage and recommend a chemical paint stripper.
Thanks.
Graham

Only time I have repainted side panels, I have used elbow grease and wet and dry to prep.

Using paint stripper on old pastics is going to be a gamble, and I honestly wouldn't myself.

Paint stripper and plastic dont go together, got the tee shirt for that one.
To be honest with the amount of work you need to do i would get new panels from lpm

I‘ve done lots of plastics on 350‘s and 400‘s using Sump Magnets method - definitely do not use paint stripper - even the environmentally safe crap they sell these days will ruin them.  I start with freecut 150 on a soft foam block to get the bulk off, then a short piece rolled up to get into the awkward grooves and corners.  Originals were a cream coloured plastic, so you know when it’s all gone.   Then repeat the process with freecut 320 and after panel wiping, you are good to go with plastic primer, high build and colour plus lacquer, flatting with 600 in between.  Good prep and patience is the key.

Bought some used side panels for my 750F1, decided to strip one of them prior to repainting, but there was so many layers of paint on it that it would have taken forever. In the end I got a nice smooth surface and gave it a coat of plastic primer and repainted it.
