April 1971 500/4 for anyone?
« on: May 28, 2020, 04:59:27 PM »
If anyone is looking, there is a low mileage (14k) 'ride or restore' in Freddie the Fat Frogs website and it seems to still be for available. Isn't April a very early model?  ...Sadly I'm not allowed it...   All 4pipes and a tank like new inside.

I'm sure there's a flaw that I haven't spotted?

That needs a lot of expensive, not easy to get parts and looks to be a bit of a bitsa, im sure the one side panel badge says 550

If it hasn't been running in all that time, an engine strip and rebuild will be necessary and the same with the carbs, but if you don't mind footling about it might be good.  I am probably out of touch but £2000 for a non runner with holes in the exhaust pipes seems like a lot of money.

I must be too optimistic....If it turns over it'll run. Plus I don't mind a bit of 'patina' !

I hadn't spotted the 550 badges ! Lesson to self - pay more attention.

Aren't those exhausts hard to come by though- even if they need repairing?

At least it should come apart more easily being an import.  But a frame number would put the age beyond doubt,.  An engine number would give more confidence - to actually go and have a look.  I have bought 2 bikes from the Fat frog and they were as stated.  There is no substitute for having a good look in person.  Maybe all the exhausts are beyond hope..... is there an air box?.  I paid more than that for a cl450..... and still have it.

you could buy my 500 for that and mine's mechanically sound and on the road, albeit a bit scruffy.

I think that’s expensive, even for a K0.

As a benchmark I paid £1,600 for my K0 from DK that was massively seized but had really good chrome etc and all the bits present.

Even then I ended up spending at least that again on a rebuild and new pipes
If you think there's light at the end of the tunnel it's usually another train !!
