Rectifier

1978 CB400F2. The rectifier has packed up on my bike. A new rectifier/regulator costs about £80-90. However, I can get a 3 phase bridge rectifier (1000v 50A) for less than £20. Am I missing something?

I had the same problem a couple of years ago, as I'm not an elctronics wizard I took the easy route and bought the combined unit from DS, fortunately no postage as I'm only 20 odd minutes away from the store!. Nice and easy to fit and connect, it fits quite nicely where the old voltage control unit was and with a little bit of deft finger work all the wires reached and connected ok. My only claim to fame was cutting, bending, and drilling an old brass window hinge that was laying in the odds and sods box to make a near perfect mounting bracket that provided a perfect earth.  So far so good, nice healthy charge, and by removing the old rectifier it gave a little space where you can tape a small bag of spare bulbs/fuses etc.  Have fun and stay safe. Shoud be fine provided provided that  it is heatsunk sufficiently .... you chose well with a 1000v one as this will survive any inductive voltage spikes from the electrical system .. do you have a picture of the one you are thinking of using?

Looking at the pictures for that item i would fit the 1200 volt one simply because it is finned to disipated heat and its only pennies dearer

I’m in exactly the same position now; did you try one of those rectifiers?

Was it a straightforward direct replacement for the original?

What was your experience?

Yes. Fitted the one Bryanj recommended with fins on. Checked the regulator as best I could. Seems fine so far but haven't done many miles yet. Doesn't get too hot either.

This is the one I fitted been on now for 200 miles. All fine never found much heat in it so far.

Can you post a wider pic of your wiring arrangement? It’s not standard is it?

I am putting mine back together and trying to work it the best layout.
