Squealy front brake
« on: June 26, 2020, 07:50:44 AM »
Did 100 odd miles yesterday in stifling heat and from brake started squealing again. Only when applying light pressure to lever. Squeeze harder ad it stops.

That said super embarrassing as you ride around. Pads seem to release ok so am wondering if this is down to the pad material so my question is what pads do others recommend
If you think there's light at the end of the tunnel it's usually another train !!

Standard answer " They all do that sir" This has been gone through too many times to count on the US forum and there is no clear answer, lots of different things but not just one

I used EBC pic attached. They’re semi sintered and think made in Northampton or based there.  They work better than others I tried. Took a hundred or two miles to bed in with some light and hard braking. Only squeak a little of late when I arrive home braking lightly on a slope into the garage.
They may not be as sharp as mine in the ‘70’s but it just occurred to me I now weigh 5st more ☹️
Back in the day I found cast iron discs great on long mountain descents but lethal in the wet. Zero braking!

Don't think there is a cure, just brake later and harder  ::).
Pretty sure fitting of cast iron discs was the cure to wet weather breaking in the day. OE equipment tended to be stainless to prevent corrosion, but had the dreaded wet brake delay in the wet

Mine was noisy on my 400/4 last year but my bike has been in my garage all winter not going anywhere but since I’ve started using it again this year it doesn’t make a noise. Very strange.

They always squeak and I've noticed over the years that when it stops squeaking, it needs adjusting.
