Cb550k3 Rectifier
« on: June 28, 2020, 05:57:45 PM »
Hi everybody, anybody cruising today? Went for a run just about 18miles switched to reserve fuel on my return to town so filled up, pushed starter button wouldn’t even turn over, thank god there’s a kick start lever. I came home checked voltage on battery 11.3 volts! Not good. No power whatsoever getting from alternator to battery. I have a suspect rectifier with a slightly fried red/white wire. Question is replace with just rectifier or replace with regulator rectifier. About the same cost wise from what I’ve seen so far.

On my 3 phase Suzuki gt550 I use a rectifier from fleabay  for less than 3 quid.  My 550K3 still has the original rectifier so I have not had to change it but it has the same wiring as the suzuki.  3 yellow 1 green and the Red/white?.  Well the suzuki is just red.  I have these fitted to all of the suzuki bikes and in 10 or so years not one has failed.

Its been a very cheap option.  Fleabay item search Sql35a

Thanks very much guys, that rectifier looks very interesting, anybody else tried one? I think at that sort of money you can’t go wrong. Seen a couple on dk spares but everything advertised 39.99 postage and they don’t use Royal Mail which is cheapest for sending to Orkney, especially something that can be slipped into a small Jiffy bag.

I fitted a similar one only a 50A one as it had built in heat sink fins (about a fiver) to a CB400F and it seems fine so far.

Fitted today, all seems fine, too wet for road test but passed garage run testing.

Thought I did well finding bits and pieces of correct colour wire, unfortunately no green heat shrink. Added to shopping list  along with black cable ties!!

My 400 ground to a halt on the M4 due to a lack of volts.  One of the terminals had broken off the rectitifer  flush with the epoxy potting.  I  sharpened up a screwdriver and chiselled some of the epoxy away from the broken terminal so I was able to solder a new spade onto it.  That was about 7000 miles ago.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

Good fix Mike! Was that a similar type rectifier? Wasn’t sure of the durability of these cheapo components. The temptation to spend £4 compared to £60 was overwhelming.😂

Mine was the standard Honda item.  The difference between the OEM one and what you've got is, maybe,  the heatsink.   Yours might run a bit too hot and break down.  You can always add a heatsink to it if you think it's inadequate.  With a smidge of heatsink paste.

Thanks for that I did wonder about the heat side of it. I will keep an eye on it after a couple of longer runs, I will probably replace at some point with the correct item in keeping with the bike spec. (he says with his electronic ignition)🤫
