Spoke to him and final price on the auction was not what he paid ... it said open to eBay offers if you look at the listing.

Just over 1  ;)

Seller didn't have NOVA .. says it might be pre-NOVA  and strong evidence by stickers on it that it came some time ago from DK. He may need our help .. Anyone know if DK are likely to hold records? (he's emailed them anyway as he's bought several bikes from them before ...one of them  this year). If it's on the old sytem will DVLA have a record?

No nova is a pain in the arse
I had a similar issue with a cl72 that was imported in the 80's registered and used.
Then it was broken partially for spares
One of those spares the rear mudguard and number plate bracket complete with number plate?
I did however have a written confirmation from previous owner of this
I had to apply for a nova .
Bloody long process and vjmc ray davies(?) Was a great help
If it was pre nova it should have a 389 cert or at least an import vat paid notice ...
Whatever happens keep a good copy of the receipt of where it was purchased and how much.

Heres a good link to have a scan of

Actually I did also have this with a bike that I only had the 389 cert that was pre nova.
I had to send that of and get it stamped pre nova then get it put on the nova system .
I suppose you could just go down the dating route and registering process but unsure if vin could flag up on system if it was ever on it....if it was that long ago I very much doubt it would?

He called DK on the off chance it came from them originally and they gave him the NOVA details.

For anyone else who gets stuck . . . It's been a while since I did it, but I registered an imported bike that had no NOVA or similar records, and it wasn't all that painful.

Basically, I had to complete a form VAT414 - Motor vehicles brought into the UK from within the European Community (EC).  And no, as far as I can tell it wasn't brought in from the EC; it came from the US but since I bought it in the EC and I couldn't be sure of the original importer, I figured that form was good enough.  Anyways, the form was pretty basic and asked for details of the bike, with sections for the registered keeper and the acquirer to complete.

As there was no registered keeper, I put my name in the keeper section and put minimal details about the bike in.  I couldn't give any details of date of import, where, when, how and so on.  There's also a section for how much was paid - in my case it was just over a grand.  And then there's a section on the back about who it was acquired from; I just put the details of the place I bought it from.

TBH I thought I was taking a bit of a punt when I submitted it with the registration documents, dating certificate and so on (together with a receipt/proof of purchase) but that was about it.  Took a few weeks to get the registration through, but no longer than others I've done with all the right papers.

Again, that was a while ago, but I can't see the process having changed too wildly.  Since HMRC had someone to trace back for the original import (assuming they cared - the value may have been low enough that it wasn't worth the effort), it wasn't a problem for me.  I get the feeling that so long as the DVLA have a form/receipt/bit of paper to pass on to HMRC, they can tick that box to say it's done - because they don't care about the tax side.  It's then up to HMRC as to whether they follow up, but tax alone shouldn't affect the registration.

There are different rules for within the EU imports, as no VAT is payable (at the moment, God knows what happens post final B Word) (Steve's anti politics filter kicked in there  ;) ) on import so no NOVA issue. I recently looked into importing a classic car from Sweden, who aren't in the EU, and even as a private purchase I would have copped for paying VAT on the full purchase price. T-C got round it by telling a porkie, in effect, but nothing bad happened, however it could have if HMRC knew different. They could argue that you were trying to defraud the VAT system, no doubt there are potential penalties and repercussions. However, they have to be bothered first, with minimal staff.

From my experience Honda have zero record of what frame numbers historically were sold where and in what year, us enthusiasts seem to have far more idea, hence the VJMC dating certificate scheme which has worked out great for me twice. When I registered my CB750, Honda UK and South Africa both told me to do one, as they didn't care and have no records that old. Later the DVLA sent me all the paperwork back, saying there was a problem with the NOVA number I'd given. I rang HMRC, who confirmed that it was on the system OK, that DVLA usually didn't have a bloody clue, and to try again, which worked out fine.

It was good of DK to be bothered to dig out the NOVA number for the Ash's mate, a lot of sellers wouldn't have cared less once they'd had the money from the original punter.
