Cracked Rear Brake Drum Lining - Help Please
« on: July 31, 2020, 10:16:19 PM »
Evening All,

I had some really bad news earlier regarding the rebuild of my wheels. When the hubs came back from shot blasting it was noted that the rear brake drum lining had hairline cracks in four separate places and is buggered.

What are my options as to how to proceed?

I can't see that off the shelf replacement hubs are available and from my research I can't seem to find anyone easily who can reline a brake drum. It's clearly a specialist job from the looks of this and a known issue given Ken's previous warnings to me.

What have others in this position done?

I have told the wheel builder to hang fire over the weekend before proceeding any further with painting the hubs and rebuilding the wheels. Is this something I should be fixing while the hub is dissembled in its current state? or am I able to get this done having had the wheel rebuilt? The wheel builder was suggesting that it was better to rebuild the wheel and then sort this post rebuild.

To make matters worse I was hoping to have the bike back on the road within the next month for a big roadtrip however I'm guessing that will be  a no go given the issues at hand. I"m happy to throw some money at it, I just need it done...  :-[

For what its worth I'm in the SE of the UK, Surrey way however also happy to travel a bit.

PM to Trigger on here as I believe he's equipped to reline these hubs,  you'll soon find out though  :D

For material,  people are using new suitable sized car drums as a scource and produce a liner to fit from correct grade for this purpose.

Can you get a temporary spare wheel fitted so that your road trip can still happen...?

What actual bike is it for? I still have one of the three i had done somewhere, cont remember if its wheel or just hub, you might be able to convince me to loan it out if its the right one and as long as i get one back with good drum dont care if its yours or mine

I'll drop him a message, thank you.

Sadly I don't have any alternatives and was getting new wheels built to hopefully avoid any issues. You never seem to know whats lurking underneath these days given that everything could be 40 years old, so I don't wish to throw good money at another unknown on the hopes that... I'd spend some money getting it done right now rather than pay the  consequences later, particularly given its one of my only two points of contact.  :-\

You have my attention, I'd bite your arm off if you'd be happy to loan me a rebuilt one to finish my wheels! Obviously on the basis that I have my rear hub rebuilt and returned to you in exchange, happy to add a little sweetener in there too. Let me know what you've got.

Sadly time is working against  me...

Trigger on the forum, colin Jackson, huddersfield I think? I did my own, as a hub I did mine with bearings in situ, but rim and spokes off. Then rebuilt using original spokes and rim. I have since bought a big lathe that could in theory take the whole wheel including the tyre. Car brake drums do indeed provide a good fresh liner. I used a gas torch to warm the hub, in the lathe, and used the tailstock of the lathe to press in the machines and frozen new liner in. Wasn't a quick job but a decent result. Was about as much as my poor little warco lathe could manage.
Got a 500/4 with rust and a sidecar and loadsa bits. nice and original and been round the clock

I have bought from the second one and he is open to deals but I would ask politely if there are any signs of cracking as they are known to prone to it

The problem with any of the listings is it it a 500 (323) or a 550 (390) hub. They may look the same but, are different.
The hub was changed half way though the CB550 F1 production  ;)

Well the 'bgmcaferacer' one says off a 1971 bike, which I assume is correct as they have broken 2x 1971 500's over the last few months. Both sellers have an excellent returns policy anyway (they sent me a two piece clutch pushrod ... which doen't exist !  but offered me a free refund or a 500T one as a replacement (which is the same as a 500)... definitely worth quizing them both on the state of the liners though. I reckon the cost of a re-line would be around £70 or more or am I out of touch?

That's much appreciated Bryan, timescale wise you're my only good hope now!

I've spoken to Trigger who's confirmed he can do the work however sadly (albeit rather understandably) my timescales aren't very realistic so I'm
a bit screwed with my plans. Still definitely going ahead to get the job done though and he's been very accommodating.

Thanks for the suggestions to the other linked wheels via ebay, its much appreciated. As much as I'd like the hub fixed yesterday, I really don't wish to throw money at something just as old with potential for similar issues either immediately or in the near future given its a known issue with our bikes due to their age now. Particularly given its such a crucial safety feature!

It also sounds highly likely that those hubs wouldn't be correct for my 550 based on the above comments, this is where I'm very grateful of all of your guidance given my lack of knowledge and experience with these bikes.
