You will find a selection of variable power supplies here www.gaterosplating.co.uk you need one that has a fine voltage adjustment, a digital display and goes down to point 5 of a volt.

I bought one on fleabay. Ash is the best one who will know which is best although he probably made his own.

As I understand the process the ampage is the critical factor that drives the plating process, hence the 100 mAmps per square inch. The power box I borrowed allowed me to set ampage and the box adjusted the voltage, I often had nearly 0.5V showing so a measurement of the amp draw is essential.

I will take that onboard if I decide to try it - my BiL Dave has a kit of some sort but no solution yet.

I did a lot of my own plating a few years ago with chemicals from Gateros plating who are quite cheap and very helpful. For instance, if you want half the amount they normally sell,  they are flexibe and will do that. I even went to the extent of having a little motor driven spindle with slip rings to feed in the plating power to give more uniform plating. However, commercial plating is so cheap and top quality that I just send everything out now other than small bits I need in a hurry or are mega rare and I fear losing them (like CB92 parts !)

Is it possible to rig up some kind of cheap and cheerful digital current controller if using a 12v battery charger as the power source?
It would have to be simple for those of us with minimal elecrickery skills or knowledge. 🙂
The simple filament wire controller included with the kit is very hit and miss.

I think you are wrong there Steve ..Ian is an 'ull lad  and keen to learn... he's already made and used a version of the Ashimoto curing oven      Its only a three legged device and a resistor & capacitor after all. Ian you coud probably used the resistance wire you got with your basic kit as a variable resistor (R1 in circuit)  and I can get you an LM338 no probs for free. Needs a decent heatsink though.

The circuit appears to be a constant current control circuit irrespective of input voltage.

If I want to make this a variable current controller is it simply a matter of installing a potentiometer in the output side of the circuit as a variable resistor?
