rear wheel respoke truing -driving me mad!
« on: September 24, 2020, 07:00:40 PM »
Having achieved an apparent success with the re-spoking of the front wheel I'm now working on the rear wheel and it's driving me nuts!
Bearing carry fitted and bearings/retainer etc - check
Wheel truing kit set level - check
Comfy seat-check
Radio on - check
Cuppa - check
Ciggies - check
So off we go! Having read numerous useful threads on here I gleaned that it may be better to try longitudinal runout first rather than radial, the problem is one side of the rim tends to be higher than the other , no matter which spokes I loosen or tighten, am I missing something? Or just doing it wrong?

It is very easy to get confused about what you are trying to do when trying to true I have quite easily gotten confused and wondered why it was getting worse instead of better. Just remember slackening the spokes on the low side then tightening the spokes on the high side should move the entire rim to true a little at a time, I move usually quarter turn at a time. Hope you are not more confused after reading this.

Look at the spokes and put tape on the ones where you can see the head in hub both sides then loosen the nipples on those, this leaves you 20 spokes to adjust to true with instead of 40 which is way easier!!!
Dont forget to ignore the "kick" where the rim is welded or it will drive you crazy and also retighten the 20 you loosened evenly at the end
