Petcock leaking
« on: September 27, 2020, 06:37:17 AM »
Have had the tank off the K2 the last few nights, only to find the petcock leaks (ie into the carbs)... lord knows how long it’s been doing this ...I don’t need PMJ47’s seized engine dramas! (how’s that going btw?)

What appears to be the problem is a hardened selector seal - anyone know where I can source a replacement? Ta...

Any Honda dealer if you look up part number at cmsnl. If you undo the two screws holding petcock to tank the fibre washers need replacing and generic ones are too thin so dont work

Cheers Bryan; have located a part here in Oz and now ordered - bloody great. Swamped with other bike crap today and lazily assumed the seal would not be available separately - doh.

Dont take it off the tank unless you absolutely have too, those pesky fibre washers are VERY expensive for what they are, have tried a lot of places to get thick fibre washers with no joy

Found this which may offer scource material.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Non-Asbestos-Fibre-Gasket-Material/dp/B00MV164DI

Currently not available but at 1.5mm thickness it shows potential being fuel/ solvent resistant.

This type of material is easily cut with leather workers tooling to stamp out bore and OD. Doing it on a plastic kitchen cutting board gives clean cut,  don't get caught though  ;D

...thanks K2/K6; in my case I’m steering clear of unnecessary work and will leave the petcock mounting well alone.
Cheers,
Simon

Just take the tap off. If one bit of rubber is gone you will find the seal from the tap to tank has gone also. You don't need fiber washers, soft alloy crush washers work just as good  ;)

Everything you need to overhaul a tap>>>  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Petcock-Rebuild-Kit-CB160-CL160-CB72-CB77-CB350F-CB500K-CB750K-CB750/223228618233

I find that a strange attitude to have when one rubbers have already gone hard and brittle. The o'ring that seals the tap to the tank is very important if it leaks and it will leak even if you have the tap turned off  :o

Trig. The petcock body is perfectly well sealed to the tank - I see no reason to disturb it. The leak is ‘internal’ to the petcock, ie fuel is bypassing the selector seal and going down to the carbs. There is no external wetness anywhere.

That seal (replacement now on order) has a split between two of the holes - hence the internal weep.

(Bryan’s advice wins as he has far more (7) posts than you. He he...)

Edit - I should add the tank was painted by PO about 10yrs ago, and so I assume the tank seal renewed at that time. Somehow tho’ I doubt the selector seal was renewed...
