.... would a more fail-safe approach be to simply ‘dip’ each hole with a wooden skewer, deduct 5mm and choose the bolt accordingly?

I've got my engine in bits at the moment. Cover screws are in a card punched in the pattern of the cover. I can measure the screws for you tomorrow.

That’s just what I was after TM, thanks.

I had it right, except for Nos 12 & 14, which I had the wrong way. Silly really if I had looked at it from a symmetrical point of view.

Anyway, onwards and upwards.
