Tank badges
« on: October 15, 2020, 06:31:46 PM »
I have just taken my CB550F2 tank for a refurb and re-paint etc.
I have a set of silver with black background HONDA tank badges.
The centre to centre distance between the badge mounting holes is 80mm.
I seem to think the tank mounting points are a different distance apart, smaller I think.
I’ve e-mailed the painter to ask him to measure the distance between the mounting points on the tank.
What is the normal distance between mounting points?
How are the badges fitted to the tank?
Is Silver with Black background the correct badge?
Thanks. Bill W.

Bill, they are fitted with little clips P/N 87311516000. Mine are all fitted now so can not help but, the badges have 390 on the back then, R is for right and the other badge should have L on the back  ;)

No easy to find Bill. The last good set i got me hands on i got from the states.

They were originally gold but, over time the gold goes to silver with washing and sun bleaching. Link to a NOS one >>>https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-LH-Tank-Badge-87122-390-780-CB550F-77-CB550K-77-78-OEM-NOS-small-defect/224190638891?hash=item3432cdab2b:g:O8EAAOSwOb5fg5kU

Just doing some checking on the 2 tanks I have.
The original tank I got with the bike, that someone lined with fibreglass resin and is not useable, has 2 holes in the tank to fix the HONDA badges to. They were actually stuck on with double sided tape when I got the bike. I assume this is an F2 tank?

The tank that is in for paint has 2 standoffs with holes to mount the badges I assume this is an F1 tank.

The pins have the same part No, 87311-516-000.

The badges part No of the F1 tank is 87121-390-000 and 87122-390-000.

With the F2 the part No’s end in 780. If what I am saying is correct, then it is the F1 badges I need.

Could someone confirm or correct my assumption please.

Cheers
Bill W

All i can tell you Bill is, the F1/F2 and the K3 are basically the same tank and i know the F2/K3 badges are the same. Now, i have not done a F1 for some 6 years now but, seem to recall that the F1 badges were silver and the F2 are gold so, the mounting pegs should be the same. Maybe that is the differences in the P/N 's

I have just been looking at the parts lists in Ash’s Dropbox and given that the drawings are reasonably accurate, they both have the Supersport sticker under the badge holes. On the drawings, the holes align with different letters on the sticker.
On the F2 drawing the holes appear to be above the U of Super and the P of sport.
On the F1 drawing they are further apart above the first S and the last T.
This is what led me to assume the different part number were because the pins on the back of the badge were further apart.
I know there are experts out there that have a lot more practical experience than me on these bikes, but I would rather ask questions than fork out for the wrong badges, which are like Rocking Horse droppings.
Thanks for all your assistance.
Bill W.
