How can I check if my starter solenoid is working?

Try as I might I can't figure out why my starter motor won't go, how do I check the solenoid is working? :(
I brake for animals!

Take the two small wires at the solenoid disconnect from loom and conect one to earth the other to battery +ve solenoid shoul click and starter turn if its connected

Use a spanner to short out the large terminals on the solenoid.  There will be a big spark when you do, so don't be put off.  This will prove if the starter motor is ok.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?
