Rubik's Cube question - 400/4 battery & air box ??
« on: November 09, 2020, 05:37:12 PM »
I have finally begun to strip down the bike ready for removing the engine.

I'm struggling to remove the steel box frame that makes up the battery box & air filter box. Can this be removed from the frame without taking out the rear wheel?

There is a hardened rubber section around the oval air filter box that has been all painted over with Hamerited is this part of the air box or does it come off?

So far I've not managed to get it out - is there a secret way?

The oval rubber should come out Ted but it's fiddly, even without being hammerited in. Have you removed the large metal oval snorkel thingy joining the air filter box to the plenum?

No the oval section is firmly stuck in place by the rubber. I will have to carefully break the adhesion between the rubber and the oval part. Might have to involve the Wendy's old hair dryer to soften the rubber.

Have you undone the oval julibee clip (if there is one) that clamps the oval metal pipe in place?

Yes that's off as is the 4 into 1 air box bit. I just can't wiggle what's left out of the frame it's just a bit to big to pull out until I seperate the oval pipe & sealing rubber. Tomorrow when I'm fresh in the morning. I don't want to damage either the oval pipe that's quite thin or rip the rubber by rushing the extraction tonight. I will adjust the bike lift so I can sit down to the task.

Thanks Julie I managed to separate the oval outlet pipe with a narrow paint scraper and a small lever without damaging anything.

I wonder if you can buy the small rubber pads/grommets shown in photo?

They are available at extortionate prices. Cut your own from thin rubber sheet if not worried about originality.

I have noticed that rubber grommets and items such as fuel tank rubbers do seem very expensive. I have some self adhesive rubber pads that were really cheap that came from Poundland I will probably use these they will do the trick. You can't even see them when the battery is fitted. I'm not a purist as long as it does the job that's good enough for me. It matters not that they are square rather than round!
