Sealed beam headlight
« on: November 14, 2020, 02:46:50 PM »
Afternoon all. My dipped beam has gone on my USA import 400/4. I have taken the headlight apart and realised it’s a sealed beam headlight so can’t just replace the bulb. Have rung  Silvers and asked about their replacement light unit but they say it won’t fit my USA headlight rim as the fittings are different. Silvers do a rim as well but I think it’s about £95. Wondering if anybody has any suggestions?

Would get you going at reasonable cost.

For the observant,  yes I know who the trader is. But he knows what will fit what as he's trading this stuff regularly.

I don’t know if this is the same but my 74 550 had a sealed beam.
I bought a pair of standard 7 inch headlights for the original shape Mini for about £25 ish.
One fitted perfectly in a couple of minutes, no modifications.
One went to my mate for his Triumph.

It's a real oddity, the 400 four as they are smaller than the 7inch one but also larger than the next size down in cars (5 3/4inch 160mm) that you'd see on things like triumph stag etc.

The contemporary mod used that 160mm size in a cibiè lamp,  plus an adapter ring to size it upward and fit into the 400 std headlight rim.

So ordinarily it needs something quite specific to fit.

As you can see,  an oddity.

Also found this one as I was searching.  From memory Japanese 400s of the era had similar sized headlights,  was searching for Kawasaki kh400 and this site came up,  but also sells the Honda specification unit.

I must put that in the censored words filter.

This one may be of interest to other owners wanting halogen std H4 fitment for 400 four too. I'd not seen it before.

Thanks for your replies. K2-K6 thanks, this one looks good value. Now for a silly question that I’m sure everyone else will think has an obvious answer. How would I secure the light to the headlight rim ? mine (US import ) has various fittings to hold the light in which aren’t on any of the lights that I’ve seen for sale.

I've just bought a headlight from DS for a similar price factoring for postage. It looks identical the the one in the link, the glass has the name xanadu on it, wires are same colour etc. I haven't fitted it to my rim yet but the lamp measures the same as the original. If the US rim is different then according to DS it wouldn't fit.

You may have to dismantle and post pictures of your headlight unit bradders so that those with UK fitment can confirm if there's a difference and what it is.

That may help you out.

Or the more complete one  (including rim etc) to fit straight on may offer a better option, although at increased cost.

I have a USA 400 f, I fitted the above headlight to it, works great, a lot better than original sealed beam.
I tried fitting a DS light but it will not fit in the US model rim

Hi boilermaker1.Thanks. This is the same one as K2-K6 spotted for me. It sounds a good buy with the trim as well. Did it fit fine into the original shell?

it needed a very small bit of tweaking of the inner lip of the light rim.
But the bolt holes line up with the holes in the USA shell. sit about 2mm of center. I am happy with it.
