CB500K2 - Recommended Source of Plug Caps & Plugs
« on: November 22, 2020, 11:08:54 PM »
I have just done Ash's coil refurb (my third set I've refurbed - recommended!) and can anyone recommend a source for genuine NGK plug caps and plugs - bearing in mind the number of fakes that are about.
Also, from those who have rode the 500 over time, recommended plug grade/value - NGK D7EA?

Well Phil, when I bought my plugs and caps for my CB550 a couple of years ago the best deal was with the Green Spark Plug company.  Easy to find on Google, and they are based in Cheshire.  The plugs and points are still in my 550 and still perfectly fine, and I am in no doubt whatsoever that they are genuine NGK.

I've recently bought plugs and caps for a Suzuki GS750, and bought them from the same place.  Again, the best deal I could find.  Again, no problem with fakery but this time two of the plug caps were out of stock at NGK and took a week to arrive.

I hope this helps!

In the days I was much on the highway, the D8ES-L was my favourite. It was also prescribed by Honda France. BTW, does any of you know if there's a difference between the old D7ES and the newer D7EA?

Off topic Phil but is that your rear guard on E-Bay?

I believe I also bought from Green Spark Plug but decided to go with the ND plugs instead of the NGK this time.  D7EA are fine Phil.  You going with 2 right angled long for the outers and 2 long straight for the inners?

Still to finish my coils using the Ash method as I'm trying to refine it a little but I'm going with red leads this time, just to be different.

Yes thats my guard Ken, I had to buy the guard and rear lamp to get the chrome lame holder as the breaker wouldn't split the two. Hence, had to put it on ebay to recoup the bulk of the cost.

Is that the right standard plug cap configuration? the old ones on the bike are right angled and 120 degee (ish)?

Thanks everyone, I'll google the Green Spark Plug Company

Phil,

The plug caps I bought for my 1974 CB550K1 are VD05F-B-GS for the inner two cylinders and XD05F-B-GS for the outer two. They fit just fine, and look right.  Bearing in mind that my coils are in the standard position.

Those codes are Green Spark Plugs code for black plug caps, the red ones are usually a bit cheaper, if you don't mind the colur that is.

For interest, the plugs I bought are D7EA, they've been fine since I fitted them a couple of years ago.

Again, I hope this helps!

Brian.

d7es is standard 2.5mm copper core.

d7ea is special design.

Those cap numbers are wrong for a 500, number 2 & 3 are straight caps  ;)

My apologise if I have misled you on the middle two cylinders Phil!

550s must be different to 500s for some reason?  I replaced mine with like for like for what was already fitted because the resistances were way too high, and the Honda parts book shows angled caps of two different types for all four cylinders

I hope you can get the correct ones sorted with Green Spark Plugs before they despatch them to you.

Brian.

These were original. But because most of us had to trim the wires sooner or later, we choose straight caps for 2+3 and the higher angled ones for 1+4 to compensate for the now somewhat shorter wires.

The original part number for 2&3 were 30700-300-620 and 30701-323-620 in the UK and were the same on the 750.
