Its done by a guy who lives locally and has always worked at car bodyshops - he's just moved to a garage that does classic cars. Its not a send off and leave him to do everything, I give him it stripped but dented all over (lots of minor dings), he repaired, primed and painted the gold and I then go down and position the stripes (thanks to Trigger for the stripe position measurements) as he's not a bike paint set specialist. He then marked the position, painted the black, put decals on and lacquered.
He's done all my bikes that way - works for me

But shouldn't the filler neck be left bare on the top edge to prevent lifting.

Yep as Green 1 says the paint should be bare on the lip of the neck otherwise the petrol will get under the paint  and lift it.
It tends to creep further and further down the neck  :o

I didn't want to be the one to point it out so thanks Paul for confirming it.

I should think you could carefully sand the paint off. But scratching the steel might promote rust.

I'll have a go at removing - not been a problem on previous tanks as think I removed it before use. thanks for reminding me to do it!
