I've been out in the garage every day for 4-5 hours restoring the BIL's Z400J. I wear thermals under jeans and a tee with an old fleece on top. A great investment is hiking socks and a thermal hat, keeps me warm.
I also have a dehumidifier running 24/7, it stops the bikes sweating and the tools are not warm but not like ice either. I insulated the floor and walls with kingspan sheets. Hard work but a great investment (and it stays cool when working in there in the summer!).

I went outside, uncovered the bike and ran the engine a few minutes, too cold for my old bones, I'm waiting for the mercury to stay above zero a bit more!

It would be good if the mercury thawed out.
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

It is a bit nippy, but up to 4/5 degrees by Monday so should feel OK by then.

Santa sent me some MDF letters from Hobbycraft for Xmas. I told the kids it was an anagram game - make a word out of the following letters... A G R A G E...   it took them a while.  So I've been busy spraying them black and mounting on a vertical white plank to give a new sign for the wall. Still too chilly to finish the carb on my Triumph though, hopefully next week.

I have one of these in the garage. I have been using it 3 years nearly with no problems. A nice dry heat.

Dave, how does your dehumidifier work out on the frosty nights. Mine doesn't have frost protection and makes a hell of a racket when it drops to freezing. So much so that I cant use it in this weather and have brought it into the house to keep warm.

If your garage is insulated at all, unlike mine it will not need to run at max to raise the garage temp a fair bit. (single car garage)
The 5Kw ones burn roughly a 1gal over 8hrs running on max. I run on red diesel or kerosene or a mix. So depends how much you can find fuel at in your area. Do not be tempted to buy the 8Kw ones they are really only the 5Kw ones. I power mine with a  15A 12vdc power supply.

My brother is a collector/restorer of old of pedal cycles (1940's to 1970's) - he has around 8 or 10 in his garage. The garage itself is an old sectional concrete one with a flat roof that used to leak badly. About 10 years ago he spent a load of money on a one piece fully insulated galvanised roof to stop the water leaks.

He had issues with damp and blooming on the bike frames so together we set out to insulate & heat it. Basically we attached  2" x "2 softwood studding timber frame on all four walls. He could not afford Kingspan so we used 2" thick Polystyrene. We then used the equivalent of 1/2" MDF boarding as the finish stopping short at ground level to prevent water osmosis should it ever flood. A nice coat of emulsion silk paint. We wired in lights & power points etc. Also finished the ceiling with extra insulation & MDF. The broken up & over door was screwed shut with double polystyrene insulation.

He uses an Electric Wardrobe type bar heater that is thermostatically controlled to keep it warm in the winter its 200 Watts I think - it works well without breaking the bank. In the summer no heating required. Only thing he did not do due to cost was put down a wooden floor that in my view would have been ideal - he might decide that's worthwhile in the future.

Roy, the dehumidifier I use is called Ruby-Dry. It doesn't use a compressor but is electronic and can be used in minus temperatures. It is really quite in operation, I have to check it's actually on! It uses a ceramic disc to capture moisture. A small heating element dries the disc but the water collects in a tank. The advantage is it produces a bit of heat as it dries the disc. It cost about 4p/hour to run on its lowest of three settings. This is ample for my double pre-cast concrete but insulated garage. I've have mine for 10+ years and it runs 24/7 from mid Nov to mid March. Best £250 I've spent and you can get all the spares from a guy in Wales (not that I've ever bought any!).

Hi Dave,
That sounds an interesting option. There seem to be a lot of different models when I looked online what is the model closest to yours on specification? Ted

This is the guy in Wales who sells them and all the spare parts for them. He's very helpful and posts YouTube video's showing how to service and fix them. The power consumption on low is 50W, great little machine. I think he's selling them for under £250, cheap considering the damage a damp, cold garage does to your bike over a few years.

I don’t have power in my garage and use a 12v leisure battery and solar charger for lighting.

I currently use those crystals-in-a-box “dehumidifiers”. They must work given how quickly they get converted into liquid slush.

This is of interest to me they are out of stock on most sites but have found one below but it might be sold out . The power consumption shows  it rated at 50-500 watts how come its such a wide band ?
